Facts
Nearly half of all drug related emergency room visits are due to cocaine abuse. Perceived availability of illicit drugs rises sharply with grade level. For example, in 2007, 37% of 8th graders said marijuana would be “fairly easy” or “very easy” to get, versus 69% of 10th graders and 84% of 12th graders. Contrary to popular belief, the 'typical' overdose victim is not a young novice or inexperienced user. Rather, the average age of death reported is in the late twenties and early thirties. Eighty per cent of deaths were classified as dependent, regular users. Given that the mean age of death reported in most studies is approximately 30 years, and that heroin-using careers typically start in the late teens, most fatal cases have been using heroin for a considerable amount of time prior to death. They do not, on the whole, appear to be novice users but older dependent heroin users. Deaths do occur among recreational heroin users as well. It is estimated that 17% of heroin overdose deaths are by recreational/weekend users. Steroid use can cause severe outbreaks of acne on the upper back, baldness, shrunken testicles, heavy beards, a puffy face, and depression. Extended use can lead to the growth of tumors, and can cause liver and heart disorders and damage to the endocrine system. It also changes boys' personalities. According to Joe, "You go from an intelligent, normal guy to someone who resorts to beating people up if they don't agree with you. It's a totally physical mentality, and very aggressive." |
Drug Addiction
Drug addiction is a pattern of repeated drug taking that usually results in tolerance (the need for greater amounts of the drug to achieve the same effect), withdrawal (physical and cognitive effects when drug use declines or stops), and compulsive drug taking behavior (drug taking that persists despite efforts to reduce intake and despite problems with family, friends, and work). Drug addiction encompasses a diverse range of drugs (such as alcohol, cannabis, amphetamines, and cocaine) and is caused by many different factors.
Intervention
An intervention is when a group of loved ones and/or a trained intervention counselor meets with the person in need of help for the purpose of breaking down their denial and motivating them to immediately seek drug addiction treatment. Often, individuals in the midst of drug addiction engage in a variety of self destructive behaviors. Although baffling to friends and family members such people generally either aren't aware on a conscious level that they have a drug addiction problem, or even when they know they have a problem they may cling to the false belief that the problem will somehow go away without any outside help. When an intervention is held a moment of clarity is created
for the addict. Most people struggling with the problem of drug or alcohol
addiction will accept help the very day of the intervention.
Addiction Treatment
Addiction treatment is needed when an individual finds that they have developed a drug or alcohol addiction which they are not able to successful end on their own. With the help of addiction treatment, addicted individual can get help to control their drug taking behavior and live happy and successful lives. There are several addiction treatment options available for drug and alcohol addiction. Some of these options include self-help groups, counseling, drug rehabilitation programs (in and out-patient), and residential treatment facilities. Each of these differ
in their aims and outcomes and elements of these addiction treatment options are often
combined.
Drug Abuse
Drug abuse is defined as the chronic or habitual use of any chemical substance to alter states of body or mind for other than medically warranted purposes. Drug abuse is a problem which has an effect on people of all income levels,
ages, and stations in life. Quite often the last person to see that there is a
problem is the drug abuser them self. Every year, more and more people become
drug addicts in their pursuit to get "high".
Drug Overdose
A drug overdose occurs when you consume more drugs than your body can tolerate. Drug users are constantly flirting with the risk of a drug overdose. There is a
fine line between the high they're seeking and serious injury or death. While many victims of drug overdose recover without long term effects, there
can be serious consequences. Some drug overdoses cause the failure of major
organs like the kidneys or liver, or failure of whole systems like the
respiratory or circulatory systems. Patients who survive drug overdose may need
kidney dialysis, kidney or liver transplant, or ongoing care as a result of
heart failure, stroke, or coma. Death can occur in almost any drug overdose
situation, particularly if treatment is not started immediately.
