Facts
Many states have passed Habitual Violator laws, which provide felony penalties for three DUI convictions. These offenders lose many of their civil rights -- like being able to vote or own a weapon -- as well as their driver's license permanently or for many, many years. People in our society today have weakened their ability to resist drugs, whether it is because of peer pressure, problems at home or school related stress. Because of the mind-altering effects these drugs possess, people slowly become dependent. Once they have become addicted it is, of course, not easy to quit. When their world revolves around what they are addicted to, such as marijuana, they miss out on a lot of important things in life. When a person is on drugs they usually don't try to succeed. They are blinded by the effects of it and can't understand what they are missing out on. If they were to get off of it they could see the more important things in their life. For instance, someone who has been away from drugs for a few months will try to get those good grades they always wanted or try to get a promotion at work they have been interested in. Being off drugs, they can see how to accomplish their wants and wishes. Then it doesn't have to be wants and wishes anymore, it could be the future. To get anywhere in the world today people need to have goals. Being on drugs distracts them from setting or trying for their goals, except maybe to get away from drugs. Someone who has been away from drugs for a while could tell them how it makes you not want to try for goals. People that are under the influence have trouble doing well in school or acquiring and maintaining a good job. These are important things in order to have a better life. If you don't do well in school then it messes up opportunities for the other. For example, someone could be really smart when they aren't on drugs, but the effect of it holds them back. If they don't get through school then it is hard to find a decent job and if they end up having a family to support other than them self, it could be very difficult. LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) is a hallucinogen that is commonly referred to as "acid". It is manufactured from lysergic acid which is made from a fungus (ergotamine tartrate) that grows on rye and other grains. Pure LSD is a white, odourless and slightly bitter crystalline powder. It is very potent- pure LSD the size of a small pill is enough for approximately 3,000 doses. 6.6% of employees in full time jobs report heavy drinking, defined as drinking five or more drinks per occasion on five or more days in the past 30 days. |
Dependence
Dependence is the compulsive use of a substance despite negative consequences which can be severe; drug dependence is simply excessive use of a drug or use of a drug for purposes for which it was not medically intended. Physical dependence on a substance (needing a drug to function) is not necessary or sufficient to define addiction. There are some substances that don't cause addiction but do cause physical dependence (for example, some blood pressure medications) and substances that cause addiction but not classic physical dependence (cocaine withdrawal, for example, it does not have symptoms like vomiting and chills; it is mainly characterized by depression).
Abstinence
Abstinence is the act or practice of refraining from indulging a desire. The type of abstinence we are referring to here is abstinence from drugs and alcohol. This term has two connotations when it comes to abstaining from drugs. The first refers to drug or alcohol treatment programs that aim to help an individual stop using drugs or alcohol for the rest of their lives. The time abstinence is also used in drug education and prevention. It refers to trying to stop children from ever using drugs.
Addiction
Addiction is one of the many consequences of so-called 'casual' drug and alcohol abuse. A loss of control over drugs and alcohol can be driven by physical or psychological factors, or sometimes both. Physical addiction takes place when the body comes to need a drug to function normally. If it is not taken, unpleasant withdrawal symptoms occur. The only way to avoid this is to take more of the drug. Psychological addiction takes place when an individual comes to rely on a drug to supply good feelings, such as relaxation, self-confidence, self esteem, and freedom from anxiety. This is not just a casual desire, it's a powerful compulsion.
Drug Side Effects
Drug addiction and abuse comes with a heavy price. There are drastic drug side effects associated with drug misuse and abuse. Drug side effects from legal and illegal drugs can range from mild itching to comas and death. In addition to the physical drug side effects mentioned, there are many psychological drug side effects of drug abuse; the most serious being drug addiction and overdose.
Withdrawal
Withdrawal is what happens when a person who is addicted to drugs or alcohol discontinues use. There are numerous symptoms that take place both physically and emotionally when an addicted individual stops using. Withdrawal can last a few days to a few weeks and may include nausea or vomiting, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety. Keep in mind; this only occurs if a person has regular, heavy use of a drug or alcohol. Withdrawal can be extremely uncomfortable without professional help. Treatment for withdrawal from alcohol or drugs may require a medical professional to be present. Drug and alcohol rehabilitation is often the best way to overcome withdrawal and its symptoms as well as recovery from drug addiction.
