Facts
Most street amphetamines come in the form of a crystal powder or paste and are usually snorted or dabbed on the gums. It is usually a distinct color (brown, orange, reddish) mainly due to impurities and 'backroom' methods of synthesis. Injuries due to drivers running red lights are also a common occurrence in drunk driving. More than 900 deaths per year and almost 2,000 injuries are attributed to red light running. Half of those deaths are pedestrians or drivers and passengers of other vehicles. Alcohol is a depressant and may contribute to a person falling asleep at the wheel, especially if the driver has been up for long hours. In 2002, more than 100,000 accidents and approximately 1,500 deaths occurred because a driver dozed off while driving. Raising the minimum legal drinking age (MLDA) to 21 has produced significant reductions in traffic crashes among 18- to 20-year-olds, and it appears to have had a spillover effect on the drinking behavior of 21- to 25-year-olds. One study found that college students who had been high school seniors in States when the MLDA was 18 drank more while in college than their counterparts who had been high school seniors in States with an MLDA of 21. High school graduates of the same age who were not attending college also drank more on average if they had been seniors in States with an MLDA of 18. The risks for addiction to prescription drugs increase when the drugs are used in ways other than for those prescribed. Healthcare providers, primary care physicians, and pharmacists, as well as patients themselves, all can play a role in identifying and preventing prescription drug abuse. |
