Troubled Rockford, IL
In a report from 24/7 Wallstreet, Rockford, IL (the county seat of Winnebago county) was named the 11th most dangerous city in the United States, with a violent crime rate that is even higher than Chicago's (1,386 incidents per 1000,000 people.) (It also has the unfortunate honor of being named in the number three spot on the 2013 Forbes list of America's Most Miserable Cities.) And, it's easy to see why. In 2018, nearly three of every four violent crimes were aggravated assaults, and as if that wasn't bad enough, in recent years Rockford has become famous for something else-a rising tide of drug overdoses.
Three people a week (on average) die in Winnebago County due to drug overdoses, and the largest demographic of victims are people in their fifties. Coroner records show that of the 159 drug overdoses last year, 30% were in their fifties, and 14% were in their 60s. While the numbers are cut and dry, the demographic trend in fatal overdoses is a little more perplexing. Usually drug overdose victims tend to be far younger, mostly people in their 20s and 30s. So why the change in Rockford? The answer is still unclear.
According to coroner's records, fentanyl, heroin and cocaine were the three most commonly found drugs in people who died from a drug overdose, with fentanyl, (an opioid) being found in 102 bodies, heroin in 64 and cocaine in 50. Authorities believe that the reason for the upswing in the death rate may be due to widespread prescription pain pill (opioid) addiction, as these highly addictive pills often lead to use of harder illegal drugs like heroin, which is cheaper and easier to obtain on the street.
So what's the solution for troubled Rockford? The Winnebago County Health Department now offers free community training classes to teach citizens how to administer Narcan (also known as Naloxone), a drug that--when administered in a proper and timely fashion--can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose. Police and other first responders also now carry this potentially life-saving tool, and local drug laws are constantly being updated. We can only hope that these efforts will go a long way towards stemming the tide.
