Mills-Peninsula Health Services is a not-for-profit health care organization with deep roots in San Mateo County. Founded by prominent Californian Elizabeth Mills Reid, the Church of St. Matthew Red Cross Guild opened in San Mateo in 1908 with just six beds. It was later renamed Mills Memorial Hospital. After Mills Memorial experienced significant growth in the decades that followed, Peninsula Hospital opened in 1954 four miles to the north in Burlingame thanks to the creation of a public hospital district. In 1985, Mills and Peninsula signed a merger agreement to form Mills-Peninsula Health Services. Peninsula Medical Center was replaced in 2011 with the state-of-the-art Mills-Peninsula Medical Center, which, together with Mills-Peninsula Medical Center - San Mateo Campus, provides compassionate, state-of-the-art care to patients in San Mateo County. Mills-Peninsula Health Services is part of the Peninsula Coastal Region of Sutter Health, a family of not-for-profit hospitals and physician organizations in Northern California that share resources and expertise to advance health care quality. Sutter Health's Peninsula Coastal Region also includes the Palo Alto Medical Foundation.
