Facts
Studies show that if drug users are going to progress into harder drugs after marijuana, they commonly try cocaine next. Eighty-nine percent of teenagers who use cocaine have previously used all three gateway drugs— tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana—and 99.9 percent previously used at least one of them. One of the world's most addictive drugs, cocaine is derived from the coca leaf and is usually snorted through the nose in the form of crystalline white powder. It is a stimulant that produces euphoria, alertness, and temporary increases in physical energy. The effects wear off quickly—if snorted they last between fifteen and thirty minutes, if smoked, only five to ten minutes —and the user is left depressed and listless, craving more. Alcohol Is Readily Available. Alcohol is the easiest drug for children to obtain. In a recent study of students in Washington State, 25–30% of 6th graders said that it would be easy for them to obtain beer, wine or hard liquor. This compares with about 6–7% who say it would be easy to obtain marijuana and 0% who report it would be easy to obtain cocaine, LSD or amphetamines. As children get older, they find it easier to find drugs but alcohol remains the most accessible: 55% of 8th graders say alcohol is easy to obtain compared with 25– 39% who could find marijuana easily and 10–15% who could find other drugs easily. More than one in five high school seniors (22%) report recent heavy use of alcohol compared with one in seven (15%) who report recent heavy use of marijuana. DUI offenders continue to pay for their actions many years after a DUI incident. It is estimated that in the five years following a drunk driving conviction, an offender's car insurance bill can increase by $5,000 to $10,000. Such an offense can also lead to the loss of a job, especially if an offender's job revolves around driving a motor vehicle. About 6 in 10 convicted jail inmates said that they had been drinking on a regular basis during the year before the offense for which they were serving time. Nearly 2 out of 3 of these inmates, regardless of whether they drank daily or less often, reported having previously been in a treatment program for an alcohol dependency problem. |
