Facts
Depression can turn anyone towards drugs. Pills, marijuana and cocaine offer an escape from the sadness. If the addicted continues to use drugs, loses friends and family, he will inevitably have troubles with depression. Even worse than a depression, which people experience every day, is the fact that the chances for mental illness are higher for the addicted person than for the non-addict. It could also be said the addicts are already acting in an insane way by choosing something like cocaine over loved ones and friends. The mechanics of tolerance are still not fully understood. One hypothesis suggests that when habitual heroin ingestion upsets the body's natural chemical equilibrium, the body attempts to compensate for it. More of the drug is then needed to overwhelm the body's attempt to suppress the drug's influence. This kind of tolerance is found with regular use of nearly all psychoactive substances. Methadone users may also experience nausea and loss of appetite, dry mouth that can lead to tooth decay and gum disease, and pinpoint pupils leading to sensitivity to light. Methadone may also lessen sexual function and desire. Fetal alcohol syndrome occurs when women drink alcohol during pregnancy. However, there is a lot of debate over whether the amount and frequency of alcohol consumed, and the trimester during which alcohol is consumed influences the chances of a child developing the syndrome. The only way to prevent FAS for certain is to avoid drinking alcohol during pregnancy. Nonetheless, some studies show that light to moderate drinking may not put the fetus at risk. A study among mothers who drank moderately during pregnancy found that their children experienced no negative effects as a result of their drinking. The researchers suggested that having just one drink per day is safe. However, they do not advocate drinking while pregnant. |
Detox
Detox is necessary when an individual through their chronic use of drugs or alcohol has developed an addiction. The objective of detox is to help the individual achieve a drug and alcohol free state. Detox is intended to relieve the physical symptoms of withdrawal and helps prepare the individual for entry into drug rehabilitation. Therefore, the ultimate goal of detox is preparation for long term recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.
Drug Overdose
A drug overdose occurs when you consume more drugs than your body can tolerate. Drug users are constantly flirting with the risk of a drug overdose. There is a
fine line between the high they're seeking and serious injury or death. While many victims of drug overdose recover without long term effects, there
can be serious consequences. Some drug overdoses cause the failure of major
organs like the kidneys or liver, or failure of whole systems like the
respiratory or circulatory systems. Patients who survive drug overdose may need
kidney dialysis, kidney or liver transplant, or ongoing care as a result of
heart failure, stroke, or coma. Death can occur in almost any drug overdose
situation, particularly if treatment is not started immediately.
Addict
An addict is an individual who has a compulsive urge to use drugs, to the point where they feel they have no effective choice but to continue use. An addict will continue their self destructive behaviors in order to feel good or to avoid
feeling bad. It can dominate their mind, and keep them coming back for more. The addiction can be
different for each addict, depending on their vice and the kind of person they
are.
Drug Side Effects
Drug addiction and abuse comes with a heavy price. There are drastic drug side effects associated with drug misuse and abuse. Drug side effects from legal and illegal drugs can range from mild itching to comas and death. In addition to the physical drug side effects mentioned, there are many psychological drug side effects of drug abuse; the most serious being drug addiction and overdose.
Addiction Treatment
Addiction treatment is needed when an individual finds that they have developed a drug or alcohol addiction which they are not able to successful end on their own. With the help of addiction treatment, addicted individual can get help to control their drug taking behavior and live happy and successful lives. There are several addiction treatment options available for drug and alcohol addiction. Some of these options include self-help groups, counseling, drug rehabilitation programs (in and out-patient), and residential treatment facilities. Each of these differ
in their aims and outcomes and elements of these addiction treatment options are often
combined.
