Facts
Cocaine craving may result from the desire for pleasurable effects of the drug. A closely related concept to this model is that of dopamine as the motivation/cognition-related neurotransmitter, the phasic release of which underlies the anticipation of pleasurable outcomes and motivational behaviors targeted at avoiding the loss of pleasure. Prescription drugs that are abused or used for nonmedical reasons can alter brain activity and lead to dependence. Commonly abused classes of prescription drugs include opioids (often prescribed to treat pain), central nervous system depressants (often prescribed to treat anxiety and sleep disorders), and stimulants (prescribed to treat narcolepsy, ADHD, and obesity). The estimated number of heroin users in the United States has risen to 980,000 from 600,000 at the beginning of the 1990's, while cocaine use has decreased 70 percent, according to the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy. The agency attributes the resurgence in heroin use to new forms of the drug, smokable and snortable alike; to a prevailing myth among the young that heroin is safer when not injected; and to the "heroin chic" look of models in the early 90's. Underage drinking is a serious problem. SAMHSA has found that 10.4 million youth age 12-20 consume alcohol. Nearly half (5.1 million) are binge drinkers, and 22% (2.3 million) are heavy drinkers. Children begin abusing drugs and alcohol, including binge drinking, at early ages, and AOD use increases with age. In the 2000 Monitoring the Future Study (MTF), 14% of 8th graders and 30% of 12th graders reported binge drinking in the preceding two weeks. Similarly, according to the 1998 MTF, drug use in the preceding 30 days more than doubled between 8th graders (12%) and 12th graders (26%). The earlier in life a child begins drinking, the greater the odds he or she will become alcoholic. |
Withdrawal
Withdrawal is what happens when a person who is addicted to drugs or alcohol discontinues use. There are numerous symptoms that take place both physically and emotionally when an addicted individual stops using. Withdrawal can last a few days to a few weeks and may include nausea or vomiting, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety. Keep in mind; this only occurs if a person has regular, heavy use of a drug or alcohol. Withdrawal can be extremely uncomfortable without professional help. Treatment for withdrawal from alcohol or drugs may require a medical professional to be present. Drug and alcohol rehabilitation is often the best way to overcome withdrawal and its symptoms as well as recovery from drug addiction.
Addiction Treatment
Addiction treatment is needed when an individual finds that they have developed a drug or alcohol addiction which they are not able to successful end on their own. With the help of addiction treatment, addicted individual can get help to control their drug taking behavior and live happy and successful lives. There are several addiction treatment options available for drug and alcohol addiction. Some of these options include self-help groups, counseling, drug rehabilitation programs (in and out-patient), and residential treatment facilities. Each of these differ
in their aims and outcomes and elements of these addiction treatment options are often
combined.
Drug Addiction
Drug addiction is a pattern of repeated drug taking that usually results in tolerance (the need for greater amounts of the drug to achieve the same effect), withdrawal (physical and cognitive effects when drug use declines or stops), and compulsive drug taking behavior (drug taking that persists despite efforts to reduce intake and despite problems with family, friends, and work). Drug addiction encompasses a diverse range of drugs (such as alcohol, cannabis, amphetamines, and cocaine) and is caused by many different factors.
Intervention
An intervention is when a group of loved ones and/or a trained intervention counselor meets with the person in need of help for the purpose of breaking down their denial and motivating them to immediately seek drug addiction treatment. Often, individuals in the midst of drug addiction engage in a variety of self destructive behaviors. Although baffling to friends and family members such people generally either aren't aware on a conscious level that they have a drug addiction problem, or even when they know they have a problem they may cling to the false belief that the problem will somehow go away without any outside help. When an intervention is held a moment of clarity is created
for the addict. Most people struggling with the problem of drug or alcohol
addiction will accept help the very day of the intervention.
Alcoholism
Alcoholism, also known as "alcohol dependence," is a condition that includes craving and continued alcohol abuse despite repeated drinking-related problems, such as losing a job or getting into trouble with the law. It includes four major areas: Craving: - A strong need, or compulsion, to drink. Impaired control: -The inability to limit one's drinking on any given occasion. Physical dependence: -Withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety, when alcohol use is stopped after a period of heavy drinking. Tolerance: - The need for increasing amounts of alcohol in order to feel its effects.
