Facts
Nearly 40 percent of deaths connected with illegal drugs strike people between age thirty and thirty-nine, a group with elevated rates of chronic problems due to drug abuse. Overall rates are higher for men than for women, and for blacks than for whites. AIDS is the fastest-growing cause of all illegal drug-related deaths. More than 33 percent of new AIDS cases affect injecting drug users and their sexual partners. Did you ever consider how the effects of marijuana might impair your ability to drive? Did you ever think about what distorted perception, slowed-down reaction time, and lethargy might mean if you had to brake suddenly? Some people think that it’s not a problem to drive a car when they're stoned. Some even believe that they can operate a motor vehicle more safely than when they are sober. By now, most people know that drunk driving is bad. But did you know that almost 1 in 4 car crashes involve drugs? And marijuana is not like alcohol. Instead of the impairment decreasing over time, it actually increases for up to 21 hours after use, regardless of amount. An alcohol detox program is an integral component of any alcohol treatment program. Many factors must be considered when developing an alcohol detox protocol. Issues such as your age, medical issues, amount and frequency of alcohol use are all considered. The alcohol detox treatment protocol developed is the key in managing any symptoms associated with alcohol withdrawal. An alcohol detox program should be a medically monitored unit, complete with 24-hour nursing and a physician credentialed in addiction medicine. Due to the health concerns associated with alcoholism or alcohol abuse, an alcohol detox and treatment program must be able to address the medical needs of each patient. At the moment, the technology of roadside drug testing is not as advanced as that of breathalysing for alcohol. Despite this, improvements are being made and once tests are available that can give accurate and immediate information on all the illegal drugs an individual may have used, they need to be implemented as part of a roadside testing campaign. In addition there is an urgent need to improve the availability of affordable transport late at night when clubs close. If the only choice is between an expensive taxi or driving your own car after having used illegal drugs, it can hardly be that surprising if many young people choose the latter. Many of the young people interviewed did not know the legal position regarding drug- driving. There is a clear need then to provide much wider information on the legal consequences of drug-driving. Finally, we need to try and change public attitudes towards drugs and driving. Over the last few years there has been a dramatic reduction in the numbers of people arrested for drink-driving. Indeed, driving under the influence of alcohol has come to be seen as socially unacceptable. The same needs to happen in relation to illegal drug use. |
Drug Side Effects
Drug addiction and abuse comes with a heavy price. There are drastic drug side effects associated with drug misuse and abuse. Drug side effects from legal and illegal drugs can range from mild itching to comas and death. In addition to the physical drug side effects mentioned, there are many psychological drug side effects of drug abuse; the most serious being drug addiction and overdose.
Residential Treatment
Residential treatment offers intensive drug addiction help over a period of weeks or months. This form of treatment has some advantages over out-patient treatment, although it may not be suitable for everyone. For example, those who are responsible for caring for young children may be better suited to attendance at an out patient treatment program. Residential treatment offers a safe, drug and alcohol-free environment where individuals can confront their own drug addiction and associated issues, with the help of qualified staff. Therapy usually consists of a mixture of group counseling, individual counseling and an introduction to the principles of a drug recovery program.
Intervention
An intervention is when a group of loved ones and/or a trained intervention counselor meets with the person in need of help for the purpose of breaking down their denial and motivating them to immediately seek drug addiction treatment. Often, individuals in the midst of drug addiction engage in a variety of self destructive behaviors. Although baffling to friends and family members such people generally either aren't aware on a conscious level that they have a drug addiction problem, or even when they know they have a problem they may cling to the false belief that the problem will somehow go away without any outside help. When an intervention is held a moment of clarity is created
for the addict. Most people struggling with the problem of drug or alcohol
addiction will accept help the very day of the intervention.
Addiction
Addiction is one of the many consequences of so-called 'casual' drug and alcohol abuse. A loss of control over drugs and alcohol can be driven by physical or psychological factors, or sometimes both. Physical addiction takes place when the body comes to need a drug to function normally. If it is not taken, unpleasant withdrawal symptoms occur. The only way to avoid this is to take more of the drug. Psychological addiction takes place when an individual comes to rely on a drug to supply good feelings, such as relaxation, self-confidence, self esteem, and freedom from anxiety. This is not just a casual desire, it's a powerful compulsion.
Therapeutic Community
An effective therapeutic community attends to the many needs of the individual, not just his or her drug use. Care given at a therapeutic community addresses the individual's drug use and associated medical, psychological, social, vocational, and legal problems. Also, a therapeutic community will continue to be flexible and provide ongoing assessments of the individual's needs, which may change during the course of care.
Remaining in care at a therapeutic community for an adequate period of time is critical for treatment effectiveness. The time depends on an individual's needs. For most people, the significant improvement is reached at about 3 months in treatment.
