    Abstinence

Abstinence is the act or practice of refraining from indulging a desire. The type of abstinence we are referring to here is abstinence from drugs and alcohol. This term has two connotations when it comes to abstaining from drugs. The first refers to drug or alcohol treatment programs that aim to help an individual stop using drugs or alcohol for the rest of their lives. The time abstinence is also used in drug education and prevention. It refers to trying to stop children from ever using drugs.

    Drug Addiction

Drug addiction is a pattern of repeated drug taking that usually results in tolerance (the need for greater amounts of the drug to achieve the same effect), withdrawal (physical and cognitive effects when drug use declines or stops), and compulsive drug taking behavior (drug taking that persists despite efforts to reduce intake and despite problems with family, friends, and work). Drug addiction encompasses a diverse range of drugs (such as alcohol, cannabis, amphetamines, and cocaine) and is caused by many different factors.

    Addiction

Addiction is one of the many consequences of so-called 'casual' drug and alcohol abuse. A loss of control over drugs and alcohol can be driven by physical or psychological factors, or sometimes both. Physical addiction takes place when the body comes to need a drug to function normally. If it is not taken, unpleasant withdrawal symptoms occur. The only way to avoid this is to take more of the drug. Psychological addiction takes place when an individual comes to rely on a drug to supply good feelings, such as relaxation, self-confidence, self esteem, and freedom from anxiety. This is not just a casual desire, it's a powerful compulsion.

    Drug Overdose

A drug overdose occurs when you consume more drugs than your body can tolerate. Drug users are constantly flirting with the risk of a drug overdose. There is a fine line between the high they're seeking and serious injury or death. While many victims of drug overdose recover without long term effects, there can be serious consequences. Some drug overdoses cause the failure of major organs like the kidneys or liver, or failure of whole systems like the respiratory or circulatory systems. Patients who survive drug overdose may need kidney dialysis, kidney or liver transplant, or ongoing care as a result of heart failure, stroke, or coma. Death can occur in almost any drug overdose situation, particularly if treatment is not started immediately.

    Alcoholism

Alcoholism, also known as "alcohol dependence," is a condition that includes craving and continued alcohol abuse despite repeated drinking-related problems, such as losing a job or getting into trouble with the law. It includes four major areas:

  • Craving: - A strong need, or compulsion, to drink.
  • Impaired control: -The inability to limit one's drinking on any given occasion.
  • Physical dependence: -Withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety, when alcohol use is stopped after a period of heavy drinking.
  • Tolerance: - The need for increasing amounts of alcohol in order to feel its effects.

    Drug Threat in Weldon Spring

    Sources
Drug Situation: Mexican poly-drug trafficking organizations control a large majority of the distribution of methamphetamine, cocaine, marijuana, and heroin in Missouri. Various organizations with ties to Texas and California continue to traffic in cocaine and heroin. In addition, hundreds of small toxic methamphetamine laboratories are found in all areas of Missouri.

Cocaine: Enforcement activities reflect a steady supply of cocaine coming into the metropolitan areas of Missouri. The citys of Texas and California continue to be the major sources of supply. Crack cocaine continues to be readily available in all urban areas of the city. After previous declines, the number of cocaine-related overdose deaths continued to rise in the St. Louis area during 2003. In addition, the number of deaths resulting from cocaine in combination with other drugs continued to increase.

Heroin: The trafficking and abuse of heroin in the St. Louis area is a significant concern to law enforcement and to the community. Mexican black tar, and to a lesser degree Mexican brown, Southwest Asian, and South American heroin are all available in the St. Louis area. Heroin abuse appears to have spread from the City of St. Louis to surrounding areas, as evidenced by the continuing increase of heroin-related deaths in St. Louis County. Mexican black tar and brown heroin are also available on a limited basis in the Kansas City area.

Methamphetamine: Both Mexican and locally produced methamphetamine continue to be available throughout the city. Generally, locally produced methamphetamine is of higher potency than that imported from Mexico. The continuing proliferation of small toxic laboratories throughout Missouri continues to put a severe strain on the resources of law enforcement. High purity crystal methamphetamine or “ice” has become increasingly available in the Kansas City area.

Predatory Drugs: MDMA (Ecstasy) is available at dance clubs and colleges/universities throughout the city. It is brought into the city from Los Angeles, New York, and Miami. LSD is available in all parts of Missouri, but is not seen as a significant problem. GHB and Rohypnol continue to be available.

Marijuana: Marijuana is readily available throughout the city with Mexican marijuana being imported from the Southwest Border. Indoor marijuana growing continues to increase. "Grass roots" groups have promoted legalization, but the city has not sanctioned the cause. Law enforcement agencies do not anticipate a shift in the official position. Treatment admissions for marijuana use grew approximately 400 percent between 1994 and 2001, only exceeded by admissions for methamphetamine and amphetamine abuse.

Other Drugs: Oxycontin abuse is increasing throughout the city. Vicodin, Percocet, and OxyContin thefts are increasing as a result of window smashing of pharmacies in the St. Charles area. These drugs are being used as an offset to heroin, according to law enforcement reports.

DEA Mobile Enforcement Teams: This cooperative program with city and local law enforcement counterparts was conceived in 1995 in response to the overwhelming problem of drug-related violent crime in towns and cities across the nation. There have been 409 deployments completed resulting in 16,763 arrests of violent drug criminals as of February 2004. There have been ten MET deployments in the city of Missouri since the inception of the program: Sikeston, Fountain Park, St. Charles County, Audrain County, Crystal City, Berkeley, Hannibal, Franklin County, Joplin, and Springfield.

DEA Regional Enforcement Teams: This program was designed to augment existing DEA division resources by targeting drug organizations operating in the United citys where there is a lack of sufficient local drug law enforcement. This Program was conceived in 1999 in response to the threat posed by drug trafficking organizations that have established networks of cells to conduct drug trafficking operations in smaller, non-traditional trafficking locations in the United citys. Nationwide, there have been 22 deployments completed resulting in 608 arrests of drug trafficking criminals as of February 2004. There has been one RET deployment in the city of Missouri since the inception of the program, in Springfield/Joplin.

Special Topics: The St. Louis Homicide Initiative was created by DEA St. Louis and the St. Louis Metropolitan Police Department to address and combat the city's increase in drug related homicides. The objectives of this initiative are to identify violent organizations involved in drug trafficking activity and to develop investigative leads by use of court authorized telephone intercepts to clear unsolved homicides and related crimes. Missouri is crossed by a number of Intercity Highways (Intercitys 44, 64, and 70 from east to west; 35 and 55 from north to south), providing excellent smuggling routes for drug trafficking organizations. During FY2003, highway interdictions in Missouri led to seizures including approximately 380 kilograms of cocaine, 2.5 kilograms of heroin, 11.5 pounds of methamphetamine, 19,000 pounds of marijuana and nearly $1.8 million dollars.

Drug rehabilitation is a multi-phase, multi-faceted, long term process. Detoxification is only the first step on the road of addiction treatment. Physical detoxification alone is not sufficient to change the patterns of a drug addict. Recovery from addiction involves an extended process which usually requires the help of drug addiction professionals. To make a successful recovery, the addict needs new tools in order to deal with situations and problems which arise. Factors such as encountering someone from their days of using, returning to the same environment and places, or even small things such as smells and objects trigger memories which can create psychological stress. This can hinder the addict's goal of complete recovery, thus not allowing the addict to permanently regain control of his or her life.

Almost all addicts tell themselves in the beginning that they can conquer their addiction on their own without the help of outside resources. Unfortunately, this is not usually the case. When an addict makes an attempt at detoxification and to discontinue drug use without the aid of professional help, statistically the results do not last long. Research into the effects of long-term addiction has shown that substantial changes in the way the brain functions are present long after the addict has stopped using drugs. Realizing that a drug addict who wishes to recover from their addiction needs more than just strong will power is the key to a successful recovery. Battling not only cravings for their drug of choice, re-stimulation of their past and changes in the way their brain functions, it is no wonder that quitting drugs without professional help is an uphill battle.

Alcohol Rehab, Weldon Spring, Missouri, MO

Alcohol rehab in Weldon Spring is a place where an individual who has a drinking problem can receive help. Rehab is a program that helps the individual with their alcohol addiction and provides them with the tools necessary for a complete recovery.

Alcohol rehab in Weldon Spring works for many people who have problems with alcohol abuse. But just like any other drug of abuse, the individual has to be committed to make a change for the better. Some people stop drinking and remain sober. Others have long periods of sobriety with bouts of relapse. And still others cannot stop drinking for any length of time. With alcohol rehab, one thing is clear: the longer a person abstains from alcohol, the more likely he or she will be able to stay sober.

Drug Detox, Weldon Spring, Missouri, MO

The goal of detox in Weldon Spring is to rid the body of toxins accumulated by drug use. The first step of detox is drug withdrawal. Drug withdrawal is "the act or process of ceasing to use an addictive drug." Once an individual has discontinued using drugs physical and behavioral withdrawal symptoms may follow. Detox in Weldon Spring is a process that helps diminish the uncomfortable symptoms of drug withdrawal.

Detox is performed in many different ways depending on where you decide to receive treatment. Most detox centers in Weldon Spring simply provide treatment to avoid physical withdrawal to alcohol & other drugs. A quality detox program will not only to provide the individual with counseling during detox but help with the physical withdrawal and the psychological root cause of the individual's addiction problem, so as to decrease the chances of relapse.

Drug detox can be viewed in three separate stages:

    1. Medical Detox: A medical doctor will need to supervise your medical withdrawal from drugs, ensuring you complete this phase safely and with minimal complications. Medical detox can take several days.

    2. Physical Detox: Once your body is no longer dependent on drugs, you will need to work on building up your physical health. A nutritionist can be helpful during this phase, enabling you to develop a balanced diet to help you through the rest of the detox process.

    3. Emotional Detox: Detox can be extremely difficult on your emotional health, which is why most treatment centers offer counseling during detox. Because drugs have become an integral part of your mental, emotional and social life, you will need emotional help as you detox.
