Facts
All people have habits, or behaviors that are repeated so often that they become almost automatic. In this sense habit is not necessarily good or bad. As applied to drug use, however, habit refers to regular, persistent use of a drug in amounts that may create some risk for the user, and over which the user does not have complete voluntary control. A drug habit implies that the drug use has become a concern on the part of the user or friends, family, or coworkers, but it may not yet be clear that the user needs treatment. Inhaling is one of the most abusive substances that children and teenagers use in the US. Children will tend to inhale fumes and chemicals from sprays and ordinary household products, and these fumes can cause irreparable damage and/or death. These materials that are used to get high are called inhalants. The problem is slowly spreading worldwide and there are constantly cases of children using inhalants that lead to their deaths. Prescription drugs are medicines that are given to a patient by a doctor to treat a specific health condition. Prescription drugs make complex surgeries possible, relieve pain for millions of people, and enable individuals with certain medical conditions, like diabetes, to control their symptoms. Prescription drugs are not harmful if they are used properly and only under a doctor's supervision. However, taking prescription drugs without a doctor's approval and supervision can be a dangerous, even deadly, decision. People in our society today have weakened their ability to resist drugs, whether it is because of peer pressure, problems at home or school related stress. Because of the mind-altering effects these drugs possess, people slowly become dependent. Once they have become addicted it is, of course, not easy to quit. When their world revolves around what they are addicted to, such as marijuana, they miss out on a lot of important things in life. When a person is on drugs they usually don't try to succeed. They are blinded by the effects of it and can't understand what they are missing out on. If they were to get off of it they could see the more important things in their life. For instance, someone who has been away from drugs for a few months will try to get those good grades they always wanted or try to get a promotion at work they have been interested in. Being off drugs, they can see how to accomplish their wants and wishes. Then it doesn't have to be wants and wishes anymore, it could be the future. To get anywhere in the world today people need to have goals. Being on drugs distracts them from setting or trying for their goals, except maybe to get away from drugs. Someone who has been away from drugs for a while could tell them how it makes you not want to try for goals. People that are under the influence have trouble doing well in school or acquiring and maintaining a good job. These are important things in order to have a better life. If you don't do well in school then it messes up opportunities for the other. For example, someone could be really smart when they aren't on drugs, but the effect of it holds them back. If they don't get through school then it is hard to find a decent job and if they end up having a family to support other than them self, it could be very difficult. |
Detox
Detox is necessary when an individual through their chronic use of drugs or alcohol has developed an addiction. The objective of detox is to help the individual achieve a drug and alcohol free state. Detox is intended to relieve the physical symptoms of withdrawal and helps prepare the individual for entry into drug rehabilitation. Therefore, the ultimate goal of detox is preparation for long term recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.
Drug Addiction
Drug addiction is a pattern of repeated drug taking that usually results in tolerance (the need for greater amounts of the drug to achieve the same effect), withdrawal (physical and cognitive effects when drug use declines or stops), and compulsive drug taking behavior (drug taking that persists despite efforts to reduce intake and despite problems with family, friends, and work). Drug addiction encompasses a diverse range of drugs (such as alcohol, cannabis, amphetamines, and cocaine) and is caused by many different factors.
Tolerance
Tolerance to a drug takes place when an individual is exposed to the same drug repeatedly and begins to build up an resistance to the drugs effects. The body then adapts and develops a tolerance for the drug. The addiction that is produced is so powerful that it creates cravings in the user. These cravings for the drug are the result of its impact on the individual's memory with feelings of pleasantness and euphoria which the individual has come to associate with the taking of the drug.
Addiction Treatment
Addiction treatment is needed when an individual finds that they have developed a drug or alcohol addiction which they are not able to successful end on their own. With the help of addiction treatment, addicted individual can get help to control their drug taking behavior and live happy and successful lives. There are several addiction treatment options available for drug and alcohol addiction. Some of these options include self-help groups, counseling, drug rehabilitation programs (in and out-patient), and residential treatment facilities. Each of these differ
in their aims and outcomes and elements of these addiction treatment options are often
combined.
Therapeutic Community
An effective therapeutic community attends to the many needs of the individual, not just his or her drug use. Care given at a therapeutic community addresses the individual's drug use and associated medical, psychological, social, vocational, and legal problems. Also, a therapeutic community will continue to be flexible and provide ongoing assessments of the individual's needs, which may change during the course of care.
Remaining in care at a therapeutic community for an adequate period of time is critical for treatment effectiveness. The time depends on an individual's needs. For most people, the significant improvement is reached at about 3 months in treatment.
