Facts
Morphine is the most commonly used drug in the treatment of pain. A number of physiological symptoms result from morphine administration, which are the consequence of the drug acting in several brain regions. The main physical effects morphine has is to reduce pain perception. Morphine commonly causes NAUSEA and VOMITING, particularly with initial use. It also causes a marked constriction of the pupil, known as ‘pinpoint pupil’. This sign is commonly seen in HEROIN addicts (heroin being a semi-synthetic derivative of morphine). Opiates slow the movement of food through the digestive tract and thus cause constipation. The most dangerous physiological effect is respiratory depression, respiratory arrest being the most common cause of death from overdose. Substance abuse in families tends to lead to increased physical abuse. In 1994 it was estimated that about 10 million American children lived in households with a substance abuser. A minimum of 675,000 children per year are neglected or abused by drug- or alcohol- dependent caretakers. Drug abuse can disrupt family dynamics among the rich, the middle class, and the poor and in any ethnic group. Research shows that people whose parents were substance abusers are more likely to have marital problems and psychiatric symptoms, especially if they had experienced physical and sexual abuse. It has also been found that domestic violence commonly occurs when the violent individual is also an alcohol abuser. Addiction: Compulsive and often uncontrollable craving, seeking, and use of a drug. The individual uses even when they know that using is not in their best interest. Addiction could be defined as chronically making the firm decision not to use, followed shortly by a Relapse due to experiencing overwhelming and compulsive urges to use despite the firm decision not to. Alcohol is involved in 50% of all driving fatalities. |
Detox
Detox is necessary when an individual through their chronic use of drugs or alcohol has developed an addiction. The objective of detox is to help the individual achieve a drug and alcohol free state. Detox is intended to relieve the physical symptoms of withdrawal and helps prepare the individual for entry into drug rehabilitation. Therefore, the ultimate goal of detox is preparation for long term recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.
Intervention
An intervention is when a group of loved ones and/or a trained intervention counselor meets with the person in need of help for the purpose of breaking down their denial and motivating them to immediately seek drug addiction treatment. Often, individuals in the midst of drug addiction engage in a variety of self destructive behaviors. Although baffling to friends and family members such people generally either aren't aware on a conscious level that they have a drug addiction problem, or even when they know they have a problem they may cling to the false belief that the problem will somehow go away without any outside help. When an intervention is held a moment of clarity is created
for the addict. Most people struggling with the problem of drug or alcohol
addiction will accept help the very day of the intervention.
Drug Abuse
Drug abuse is defined as the chronic or habitual use of any chemical substance to alter states of body or mind for other than medically warranted purposes. Drug abuse is a problem which has an effect on people of all income levels,
ages, and stations in life. Quite often the last person to see that there is a
problem is the drug abuser them self. Every year, more and more people become
drug addicts in their pursuit to get "high".
Dependence
Dependence is the compulsive use of a substance despite negative consequences which can be severe; drug dependence is simply excessive use of a drug or use of a drug for purposes for which it was not medically intended. Physical dependence on a substance (needing a drug to function) is not necessary or sufficient to define addiction. There are some substances that don't cause addiction but do cause physical dependence (for example, some blood pressure medications) and substances that cause addiction but not classic physical dependence (cocaine withdrawal, for example, it does not have symptoms like vomiting and chills; it is mainly characterized by depression).
Drug Rehabilitation
Drug rehabilitation is a place or program that an individual enters to treat a drug or alcohol addiction. Through therapy and education, the individual is restored to their former non-drug using self. They are then able to re-enter society clean and sober. There are many reasons why a person would need to attend a drug rehabilitation program. Some of the many reasons are: the inability to control their drinking or drug use, alienating their friends and family, problems with the law, and problems at work. Also, there are several different types of drug rehabilitation programs available: inpatient, outpatient, residential, short-term, and long-term.
