Drug and Alcohol Detoxification Withdrawal Symptoms

Research on drug withdrawal shows that when you suddenly stop using different drugs and/or alcohol, you may encounter a wide variety of symptoms; these symptoms - as well as their severity - will vary from patient to patient.

Some factors that could potentially influence your withdrawal experience as you undergo detoxification include:

How long you were addicted; using drugs on a daily basis for a long time could cause you to develop tolerance, which means that your withdrawal might be more severe.

The types of substances you were abusing; in many cases, you will find that those addicted to more than one substance might experience unique withdrawal with a constellation of unusual symptoms because one substance could intensify the other's symptoms.

The dosage of the drugs you used to abuse when you enrolled in the detox program in Cerritos, California. If a person has been abusing drugs or alcohol for an extended amount of time, they may have developed a tolerance; basically, they might have to up the amount of drugs and/or alcohol the use to get the effect that they desire. Unfortunately, these higher amounts used might eventually cause intense and severe withdrawal when you decide to quit.

If there are any dual-diagnosis disorders; patients suffering from mental health issues like depression and anxiety or physical conditions such as chronic pain or insomnia may experience more severe withdrawal symptoms and significant distress.

The half life of the drugs; drugs with a short half life come with more immediate withdrawal symptoms whereas long-acting substances might cause your withdrawal symptoms to be delayed for hours or days.

Recent studies on addiction treatment show that when you undergo detox, you might develop any of the following withdrawal symptoms:

  • Agitation
  • Chills
  • Cravings
  • Flu-like symptoms, which could include vomiting, nausea, headache, and runny nose
  • Irritability
  • Mood swings
  • Shaking
  • Sleep disturbances and insomnia
  • Sweating
  • Tremors

Lastly, it is imperative that you go through detoxification in an accredited center in Cerritos to make sure that all these potential withdrawal symptoms are managed and that you do not give in to the temptation to relapse.
