Ultram also known as tramadol (brand name) is a drug that is similar to narcotic analgesics used for relieving moderate to severe pain. Ultram works by directing the brain on how to feels and respond towards pain. It is important to note that no all Ultram side effects have been reported. You must therefore consider consulting your doctor if you experience any new side effects that are not discussed below.

Ultram consumer side effects

The side effects discussed below apply to the following Ultram forms; oral tablet, oral capsule extended release, oral tablet extended release and oral tablet disintegrating.

You must seek emergency medical attention if you develop any of the following severe allergic reactions to tramadol (the main Ultram ingredient). These reactions include; hives, face swelling, lip swelling, tongue swelling, throat swelling and difficulty breathing.

You must stop using Ultram and call your doctor immediately if you experience the following serious side effects of Ultram; agitation, fever, hallucinations, fast heart rate, nausea, overactive reflexes ,vomiting, fainting, diarrhea, loss of coordination, weak pulse, shallow breathing, convulsions, skin rash, peeling skin and reddening skin.

Less serious or mild Ultram side effects include; spinning sensation, dizziness, stomach upset, constipation, headache, anxiety, drowsiness and nervousness. It is important to note that there may be many other Ultram side effects that aren't mentioned above. If you happen to experience any new side effect that isn't included above, stop using Ultram immediately and consult your doctor for advice.

Ultram side effects for professionals

The side effects mentioned below apply to the following Ultram forms namely; oral tablet, oral capsule extended release, oral tablet disintegrating and oral tablet extended release.

Ultram gastrointestinal side effects

Some of the common Ultram gastrointestinal side effects include; constipation and nausea. These side effects occur within 90 days of Ultram therapy in approximately 40 to 46 percent of all treated patients. Other gastrointestinal side effects include; Vomiting, dyspepsia, diarrhea, flatulence, anorexia, dry mouth and abdominal pain.

Ultram nervous system side effects

One of the most common Ultram (CNS) central nervous system side effects is seizures. This side effect has been reported in most patients taking normal Ultram dosages. It is important to note that risks of getting seizures increase with dosage i.e. if a patient takes dosages that are above the recommended range then they risk getting seizures.

Nervous system Ultram side effects are common. Examples of common CNS side effects include; headache, dizziness and somnolence. These side effects are reported by a quarter of all patients using Ultram. Other CNS side effects include; nervousness, tremor, anxiety, agitation, euphoria, hallucinations, confusion, coordination disturbances and sleep disorders. Rare CNS Ultram side effects include long-lasting delirium and serotonin syndrome common in elderly patients.

Dermatological side effects of Ultram

Examples of common Ultram dermatological side effects include; hives and rash. Another dermatologic side effect is pruritus. This side effect is rare happening in approximately 10% of all Ultram patients.

Genitourinary side effects

Genitourinary side effects of Ultram include urinary frequency and urinary retention. These side effects are however rare occurring in only 5% of all Ultram treated patients.

Cardiovascular side effects

Cardiovascular side effects of Ultram include; orthostatic hypotension and tachycardia. It is important to note that these side effects are rare.

Hypersensitivity side effects

Tramadol use has been associated with allergies in the past. Hypersensitivity side effects of Ultram include anaphylactoid reactions which are common after first Ultram doses are administered in patients with a history of allergies i.e. codeine allergy. Other hypersensitivity side effects include; Angioedema which is a rare side effect.

Metabolic side effects

An example of a metabolic side effect caused by Ultram is hyponatremia.

Other Ultram side effects

Other side effects of Ultram include withdrawal effects and auditory hallucinations although in rare cases. Vocal cord closure is also among the rare Ultram side effects.

In summary, it is possible to experience some of the Ultram side effects mentioned above. In some cases, you may fail to experience any of the above Ultram side effects. It is important to note that there is no sure way of determining which side effects a patient will experience. You must therefore read Ultram instructions well and stay alert for any side effects.
