Introduction: Darvocet

Darvocet is a drug used to manage mild and moderate pain. The drug is a combination of propoxyphene and acetaminophen. It is important to note that propoxyphene is habit-forming therefore darvocet use can result in dependence i.e. physical and psychological dependence.

Darvocet nervous system side effects

Some of the nervous system darvocet side effects associated with propoxyphene included; sedation, dizziness, stupor, somnolence, delirium, coma, ataxia, respiratory depression and syncope. It is important to note that nervous system side effects of darvocet i.e. sedation cause risks of hip fracture among elderly patients.

Gastrointestinal darvocet side effects

Gastrointestinal darvocet side effects are very rare except in cases of overdose and alcoholics. Examples of gastrointestinal darvocet side effects include; acute pancreatitis which is associated acetaminophen use. Other common gastrointestinal side effects include; vomiting, nausea and constipation. These side effects are caused by propoxyphene. In some cases, darvocet can also cause gastrointestinal bleeding, inhibition of prostaglandin, sphincter of Oddi alterations and hepatotoxicity. A rare gastrointestinal side effect of darvocet is ischemic colitis which is caused by propoxyphene overdose. These side effect has severe effects i.e. hypotension.

Cardiovascular Darvocet side effects

Darvocet cardiovascular side effects caused by propoxyphene include; bradycardia, arrhythmia, cardiac arrest, respiratory arrest, tachycardia, congestive arrest, (CHF) or congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction, decreased blood pressure, hypotension, elevated heart rate, dizziness and abnormal heart rate. Other cardiovascular side effects of darvocet reported include varieties of arrhythmias i.e. heart block and cardiotoxic effects. Such side effects are severe and usually caused by overdose.

Renal darvocet side effects

Renal darvocet side effects are rare. They include effects such as; interstitial nephritis and acute tubular necrosis. Some few cases of hypoglycemia have also been reported among darvocet patients having conditions such as chronic renal failure. Acute tubular necrosis is a side effect associated with acetaminophen in darvocet. This side effect usually occurs in patients with liver failure.

Serious darvocet side effects caused by acetaminophen are mostly caused by darvocet overdose i.e. chronic abuse. Another rare serious darvocet side effect is nephrogenic diabetes insipidus. This side effect is also associated with darvocet overdose i.e. propoxyphene overdose.

Hematologic side effects of darvocet

One common hematologic side effects of darvocet is; thrombocytopenia which is caused by acetaminophen. Acute thrombocytopenia is also another common hematologic darvocet side effect. The side effect is usually caused by acetaminophen glucuronide sensitivity which is the main acetaminophen metabolite. Methemoglobinemia with is known to cause cyanosis is also a common darvocet side effect caused by darvocet overdose. Other abuse hematologic side effects include; hemolytic anaemia, disseminated intravascular coagulation and pancytopenia.

Dermatologic side effects

Common darvocet dermatological side effects include skin rashes, hives and itchiness. Most dermatological side effects are caused by acetaminophen in darvocet. A rare dermatological side effect of darvocet is bullous erythema which is caused by acetaminophen.

Hepatic side effects

Darvocet hepatic side effects are common in alcoholic patients. Side effects such as hepatotoxicity are common in alcoholic patients who don't eat enough. Other hepatic side effects caused by propoxyphene in darvocet include; jaundice, elevated liver function, hepatic steatosis, hepatocellular injury, reactive plasmacytosis, hepatomegaly, agranulocytosis and hepatotoxicity.

Respiratory and Musculoskeletal side effects

Some common darvocet respiratory side effects include; eosinophilic pneumonia and dyspnea. These side effects are associated with propoxyphene use. Common musculoskeletal darvocet side effects include rhabdomyolysis and myopathy. These side effects are common with chronic oral darvocet use. Another musculoskeletal side effect of darvocet is fibrous myopathy. This side effect is caused by propoxyphene abuse in patients administering darvocet through intramuscular injections.

Hypersensitivity and genitourinary side effects

Hypersensitivity side effects of darvocet are rare. They however manifest as allergic reactions i.e. skin rash, hives e.t.c. Hypersensitivity effects caused by darvocet are associated with propoxyphene. Genitourinary side effects caused by darvocet are also rare. One rare side effect is retroperitoneal fibrosis which is associated or caused by propoxyphene therapy.

Other darvocet side effects

Darvocet also has other side effects. For instance, darvocet can cause dependence which is usually associated with darvocet abuse. Darvocet also has withdrawal effects which are caused by sudden withdrawal of the drug. Other darvocet side effects include; restlessness, agitation, anxiety, tremor, insomnia, tachycardia, psychosis, cramps, vomiting, hallucinations, seizures and sweating. Sensorineural deafness is also a darvocet side effect associated with chronic Darvocet abuse. This side effect is rare. Another rare side effect is Optic atrophy caused by darvocet overdose.
