In 1971, University Hospital, a city-owned 485-bed medical facility, opened across the street from MMC and became the University Medical Center (UMC) in 1982, as a private not-for-profit organization - the current UF Health Shands Psychiatric Hospital. It contracted with the city of Gainesville to operate the facility and provide care for the uninsured. - The next year, UMC opened the first Level I trauma center in Florida, complete with long-range air ambulance service. In 2013, UMC became UF Health Shands Psychiatric Hospital. The mission of the UF Health Shands Psychiatric Hospital is to heal, to comfort, to educate and to discover. - They dedicate their work to improving the lives of those they touch via quality health care, medical education, innovation and research. Together with their University of Florida colleagues and affiliates, UF Health Shands Psychiatric Hospital provides a wide range of health care services across the continuum of care on an inpatient and outpatient basis. - Backed by a team of more than 400 faculty physicians, the UF Health Shands Psychiatric Hospital offers nearly 100 specialty services, including: drug and substance abuse rehab, cancer services, cardiovascular services, neuroscience services, orthopedic services, pediatrics, poison center, trauma and critical care services, and women & family care.
