Over the years many people have died due to a Methadone overdose. In 1992 alone there were 131 deaths attributed directly to Methadone overdose. Taking an overdose of Methadone is a serious medical emergency. In the event of suspected Methadone overdose call an ambulance. If the person is losing consciousness lay them on their side in the recovery position so that they will not choke if they vomit. Inducing people to vomit is not recommended because of the risk of rapid onset CNS depression/unconsciousness which could lead to choking. Methadone is one of the strongest opiates. It has a slow onset of action and a long half-life and causes severe respiratory depression which is usually the cause of death.
Symptoms of a Methadone overdose include but are not limited to the following:
- bluish fingernails and lips
- bluish skin
- coma
- constipation
- death
- difficulty breathing
- disorientation
- drowsiness
- low blood pressure
- muscle spasticity
- pinpoint pupils
- slow, shallow and labored breathing
- spasms of the stomach and/or intestinal tract
- stopped breathing (sometimes fatal within 2-4 hours)
- weak pulse
