What is a Drug?
Drugs are substances that can influence an individual's state of mind and can be administered to keep the metabolism in control in case of disturbances. Drugs are being used to deal with a particular state of mind and cure it. However, some individuals also make use of drugs for addictions and mental pleasures. Various types of addictive drugs became popular for a very simple reason and that is the fact that it could take the user to a certain emotional or physical state where he can experience satisfaction or ecstasy.
There are several types of addictive drugs out there and these are being consumed by younger generations, as they encounter pressure from life and society. Some people are wondering why these drugs are addictive. The reason behind this is the fact that drugs like heroin, cocaine and marijuana are administered to the body, dissolved in the bloodstream and reach the brain. Within the brain, certain pleasure sensors release Dopamine, a type of chemical that can provide the body with the feeling of satisfaction or "high", thus causing it to want the drug even more.
Recreational or Addictive Drugs
- 3, 4, 5-trimethoxyphenethylamine or Mescaline
- Magic Mushrooms or Psilocybin Mushrooms
- MDMA or ecstasy
- PCP or Phencyclidine
- Secrobarbital or Seconal
- Valium or Diazepam
- Methamphetamine or Crystal Meth
Apart from these, there are other drugs that are considered as highly addictive and hallucinogenic. These drugs include the following:
LSD or Lysergic Acid Diethylamide
This is commonly referred to as LSD-25 or acid, which was produced in 1938 by Albert Hoffman from a fungal grain known as ergot. LSD can be administered in the form of capsules, tablets or blotting paper, as it is normally in crystalline form. The administrative effect of LSD causes paranoia, hallucination, dizziness, depression, anxiety and other emotional disturbances. The physical effects, on the other hand, include convulsions, nausea and vomiting.
Marijuana or Cannabis
This addictive drug is also known as weed or Ganja and contains chemical compounds like THC or Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol. This is one of the most illegally used drugs today and is consumed by oral ingestion or by the inhalation of smoke coming from the ignited plant. Marijuana causes various mental effects like slowing of time, increased appetite and relaxation. As for the physical effects, it includes psychomotor impairment, poor concentration and increased heart rate. Individuals who smoke marijuana frequently are prone to developing various lung diseases as well.
This recreational drug is commonly known as snow, coke or Charlie and is known as benzoylmethylecgonine chemically. Back in the 18th century, cocaine is being used for the production of wine and anesthetics. It can be administered orally by simply rubbing it on the gums or by smoking it in the form of a cigarette. Cocaine can also be injected directly into the bloodstream or snorted. The physical and mental effects of this drug include restlessness, hyperactivity, feeling of euphoria and increased heart rate. It can also cause various health problems like lethargy, stroke, heart attack and lung disease.
Heroin or diacetylmorphine is also referred to as horse, gear or smack. This morphine was being used back in the 18th century as a substitute for cough remedies and is obtained from the opium poppy. Right after the administration, heroin metabolizes to morphine so it was not considered as an addictive drug before until individuals abuse the substance. Heroin can be consumed through smoke or it could also be injected or snorted. The side effects of this drug include drowsiness, euphoria, slowed breathing and warm flushing. It can also result in various health problems, such as collapsed veins, heart infections and lung disorders.
Bear in mind that these addictive or recreational drugs are unhealthy both for your mental and physical health. Unless it is being used for medical purposes, make sure that you avoid the consumption of any of these if you want to prevent any health risks. Apart from these, there are prescription drugs that can also be addicting, such as Percocet and Vicodin. In case your physician prescribed such medications, ensure that you are following the right dosage in order to prevent drug dependency that could lead to addiction. If you know someone who is frequently used any of these, it would be best to remind them of the side effects of drug use and encourage them to seek professional help immediately.
