Marijuana, otherwise known as Cannabis, is a substance derived from a plant that is used sometimes as an illegal drug, and sometimes for medicinal purposes. Now, there has been an age old debate raging for years upon years about whether marijuana should be fully legalised in all parts of the world, and made as readily available to purchase, as alcohol or tobacco. Now there are a number of pro's and con's from both ends of each argument, but we won't be addressing them here. Instead, in this article we will give you the reader, a little information about marijuana and hemp uses early in history, as a way of helping you to better understand this poweful age old substance.
Marijuana has been used as a way of achieving feelings of euphoria since way back in ancient times, dating way back to 2737 BC, mainly in China. Its uses however, soon spread to as far afield as India, as well as Africa, and then eventually Europe. It was actually originally grown as a major source of fiber in Northern America too.
Way back in 1850 up until 1942, Marijuana was used as a form of prescribed pain management in the United States, and was prescribed to help treat various conditions, including, nausea, child labour pains, and even rheumatism.
Again, from 1850 up until around 1930, marijuana was also used as an intoxicant, as a way of altering a person's state of mind.
As stated earlier, marijuana was used in China many, many years ago, back in ancient times. During their stay in China, marijuana and hemp found their way into almost every single aspect of Chinese life. Whether they were cooking, meditating, eating, and even drug therapy to treat various ailments. The Chinese developed cannabis plants and used them as a form of medicine, and as experts began to become more familiar with marijuana, it began to increase in popularity and importance, as a therapeutic treatment for various ailments. In the second century AD, marijuana was developed and used as a pain killer, as a way for surgeons to perform various surgeries, almost pain free.
Again, since the Chinese were the first to fully discover and explore the various uses of Marijuana, it is not surprising that they were also the first to fully discover the strange mind altering affects that marijuana is perhaps best known for to this day. Many Chinese people however, looked upon cannabis with disdain, as it made the body weak and feeble in their opinions. Some however, still used marijuana as a psychedelic and would actually eat the seeds, or burn them on their incense burners. This made some believe that if too many seeds were ingested, or burnt, then one would actually see demons, and communicate with spirits. They also believed that any hallucinations they witnessed from breathing in the burning cannabis vapours, were a means of fully achieving immortality.
Hemp is a substance contained in marijuana plants, and it is commonly used for fibre and making clothing. Hemp was actually the most common and main material used when making Japanese clothing and other materials. The Japanese commonly associated hemp with purity and would wear clothing made from hemp fibers during religious and spiritual ceremonies. The Japanese hold hemp in extremely high regards, and much of Japan's ancient history actually makes note of hemp on more than one occasion.
As marijuana eventually made its way over to India, an extremely spiritual country in its own right. Many embraced this mind altering substance with open arms. They believed that the substance helped to ease their anxiety. Many Indian people however, did not use marijuana as a way of dealing with stress, pain or anxiety, but rather used it because they believed it possessed strong religious ties. They believed that it helped them to get closer to, and communicate with religious spirits. When taken in a morning, the drug was considered to cleanse and rid the body of sin.
Of course, as marijuana is illegal in many parts of the world, it should be noted that it has a number of dangers. It can cause feelings of paranoia and unease when taken in high amounts. As the most common way of taking marijuana is to smoke it, it can cause respiratory illnesses, such as shortness of breath, and a build up of tar upon the lungs, which can lead to cancer. Studies have also shown that it can slow down a person's response times, and basic motor functions at least temporarily, making things such as driving and operating machinery especially dangerous. Not only to the person under the influence, but others around them too.
The bottom line is that marijuana is a powerful substance that has been made illegal in many parts for good reason.
