Behavior Symptoms of Drug Addiction
The behavior symptoms of drug addiction often vary depending on what type of drug is being used. For example, someone who is addicted to opiates will show behavior symptoms such as a relaxed or a euphoric state that may lead to a dangerous level of respiratory depression resulting in coma or death. On the other hand, an individual who is addicted to a central nervous stimulant like cocaine will be excitable and talkative.
Overall, there are some generalized behavior symptoms of drug addiction that can be applied to all types of addiction. These include mood swings, dishonesty, self isolation, depression, stealing, the inability to finish projects, acting resentful and hateful, being unreliable, and a tendency to withdrawal from society.
People who are addicted to drugs experience a loss of control. Their loss of control applies not only to their drug use, but to every aspect of their lives. One day they are able to stop at just one drink or line of cocaine. The next day they discover that they never feel satisfied regardless of who much they use and continue to use more and more. An addict will continue to use despite any negative consequences that may come from their continued drug use. Even though their drug or alcohol abuse has caused serious problems for them, they still continue to consume the substance.
Stealing from and lying to friends and family is one of drug addiction’s most hurtful behavior symptoms. Often, their level of dishonesty is directly related to the severity of their addiction. Drug addicts are usually creative and intelligent individuals who use their skills to manipulate those around them. As the drug addict slips down the drug addiction spiral, their loved ones try to deny the problem exists, sometimes for years. This is a part of the vicious cycle of addiction.
