Drug Abuse Counseling

The focus of drug abuse counseling is centered around the individual’s drug abuse problem, who they are as a person, and the content and structure of their recovery program. It provides the person coping strategies and tools for recovery. The primary goal of drug abuse counseling is to assist the individual in achieving and maintaining abstinence from drugs and alcohol. The secondary goal is the help them recover from the damage addiction has caused in their life.

Drug abuse is a problem that is often times misunderstood. It is common for family and friends of a drug abuser to feel as though the individual is morally weak and should be able to stop their drug or alcohol abuse if they were only willing to change their behavior. Drug abuse affects people from all walks of life and anyone can succumb to abusing drugs. It does not make a difference how financially secure the individual is or even if they have had a wonderful family life. Developing an abuse problem is strictly about the individual. No one sets out to become a drug addict. It is all about the choices they make along the way that leads them down the path of drug and/or alcohol addiction.

Drug abuse counseling works by first helping the individual recognize the existence of a problem and the associated irrational thinking that comes along with drug abuse. Next, the individual is encouraged to achieve and maintain abstinence from drugs and develop the necessary communication skills and personal growth to continue working towards a complete recovery from drug abuse. In drug abuse counseling, it is the individual who must take responsibility for working on and succeeding with a program of recovery.

Drug abuse counseling focuses on four components:

  • Assessing level of usage and potential for addiction.
  • Providing education on the physical and mental effects of the substance.
  • Recognizing and preventing potential addiction.
  • Creating awareness of available rehabilitative services.

There are many different drug abuse counseling programs available. These programs will help those in recovery fight their drug cravings, avoid relapse, and learn new tools and skills necessary to prevent drug use in the future. Drug abuse counseling has an enormous beneficial effect not only on the individual and their family but on society as a whole. When drug abusers get counseling, society benefits greatly. Criminality and violence go down as well as the spread of the dangerous diseases such as AIDS.
