Cocaine facts

A list of Cocaine Facts and Statistics.

Cocaine

  • Cocaine use among men is almost twice then women. Based upon additional
data sources, the office of National Drug Control Policy estimates the number
of chronic cocaine users at 3.6 million.

  • 90% of cocaine users smoked, drank, or used marijuana before trying cocaine.
  • Today it is estimated that 22 to 25 million people have tried cocaine at
least once. Conservative estimates indicate that there are over two million
cocaine addicts in the United States today.

  • Adults 18 to 25 years of age currently have the highest percentage of cocaine
use than any other age group.

  • On the street, pure cocaine is diluted or "cut" with other substances
to increase the quantity, and thereby increase the profits of its sellers.
  • Cocaine is highly addictive, especially in the crack form. In studies, animals
addicted to cocaine preferred the drug to food, even when it meant they would
starve. Many users report being "hooked" after only one use. The
addiction is both psychological and physical.

  • Cocaine-related deaths are often a result of cardiac arrest or seizures
    followed by respiratory arrest.

  • Researchers know that certain kinds of experiences, such as those involved
in learning, can physically change brain structure and affect behavior. Now,
new research in rats shows that exposure to stimulant drugs such as amphetamine
or cocaine can impair the ability of specific brain cells to change as a consequence
    of experience.

  • Pure cocaine was first used in the 1880s as a local anesthetic in eye, nose,
and throat surgeries because of its ability to provide anesthesia as well
as to constrict blood vessels and limit bleeding. Many of its therapeutic
applications are now obsolete though due to the development of safer drugs.
  • During 2001, there were approximately 1,160,000 new cocaine users in the
United States. The average age of those who first used cocaine during the
    year was 20.8 years.
