five or more drinks per occasion on five or more days in the past 30 days.
  • The 2001 survey shows 25 million (one in ten) Americans surveyed reported

  • Of the total, alcohol-related deaths in 2002 accounted for 42 percent –
17,970 deaths – up from 41 percent (17,448) in 2001. Deaths in low alcohol

by over 2,000 deaths, Russian health officials announced.

  • There are more than 150 medications that should not be mixed with alcohol.
For example, if you are taking antihistamines for a cold or allergy and drink
alcohol, the alcohol will increase the drowsiness that the medicine alone
can cause, making driving or operating machinery even more dangerous.

  • U.S. vital statistics show that more than 20,000 people a year die from
alcohol induced causes. That figure does not include people killed in alcohol-related
auto accidents or those who die of cirrhosis and other liver ailments.

  • Mothers who drink alcohol during pregnancy may give birth to infants with
fetal alcohol syndrome. These infants may suffer from mental retardation and
    other irreversible physical abnormalities.

  • During any given day in the USA, about 10,662 babies will be born. The incidence
of Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) are twenty times that of infantile HIV.

  • FAS is now the leading cause of mental retardation in the US, exceeding
Spina Bifida and Downs Syndrome, and is the only one that is preventable.
