KNOXVILLE —Tennessee fullback Ruben Mayes has been dismissed from the Vols'
football team following multiple failed substance abuse tests.
Mayes' father, Jeff Mayes, confirmed the failed tests yesterday and said his
son was considering his options.
''We're going to look into it all and get everything together,'' Jeff Mayes
said from his home in Memphis, Tennessee.
Mayes joins receiver Montrell Jones as the second Tennessee player in the last
two months to be dismissed from the team for failing multiple substance abuse
tests. Jones is contemplating a transfer to Louisville.
Under the terms of the University of Tennessee's substance abuse policy, an
athlete is indefinitely suspended following a second failed test and automatically
dismissed following a third failed test.
Mayes would have been a redshirt freshman this season and was expected to compete
against Will Revill for backup fullback duties. Revill's development will be
all the more important now, especially as a blocker, because the Vols felt they
played starter Troy Fleming too many snaps at fullback a year ago.
Including Mayes, three players from the 2002 signing class have either been
dismissed from the team or declared academically ineligible for this season.
Defensive tackle Laron Harris and guard Heath Benedict failed to pass 18 credit
hours in the fall and spring semesters and won't be eligible to play this season.
Also, tight end Aaron Kirkland and running back Gerald Riggs Jr. — two more
2002 signees — failed to meet the SEC's six-hour rule for the postseason and
were ruled ineligible for the Peach Bowl. Both players are still working during
the summer sessions toward gaining their eligibility for the 2003 season.
