Facts
It is also illegal to "doctor shop." Patients who doctor shop typically move from physician to physician, reporting the same symptoms to each doctor. They receive the same prescriptions from each doctor. Of course, the doctors do not know that the patient has already seen someone else and received a prescription for the same complaint. Doctors, too, have been arrested for running "pill mills." This occurs when doctors prescribe painkillers to patients with vague symptoms, no X rays or other evidence of the reported pain, or feeble reasons for seeking more medicine, such as having lost the first prescription. The DEA reported in 2004 that robberies of pharmacies, hospitals, and nursing homes were on the rise. In some cases, thieves have posed as safety inspectors or other hospital personnel in attempts to snatch pharmaceuticals. In 2005, strangers entered a hospital under false pretenses and the incident was investigated by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security as a possible terrorist attack. Needless to say, theft of prescription drugs carries very serious penalties, usually including jail time. The national average annual incidence rate for marijuana use among youths was 6.3 percent. At the State level, Arizona had the highest average annual incidence rate (8.9 percent). Five of the States in the highest quintile for past month marijuana use among youths were also in the top quintile for new use of marijuana: Massachusetts, Nevada, Delaware, Colorado, and Alaska. Of the 10 States with the highest estimated rates of incidence, 4 were in the West (Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, and Alaska), 2 were in the Northeast (Massachusetts and Vermont), 2 were in the Midwest (North Dakota and Wisconsin), and 2 were in the South (Oklahoma and Delaware). The national average age at first use for persons who initiated use in 1996 or 1997 at age 25 or younger was 16.2 years of age. The average age at first use of marijuana ranged from a low of 15.1 years of age in Montana and Nevada to 17.1 years of age in Maine. Four of the States that fell into the highest quintile for rates of past month use of marijuana among youths had lower than average ages at first use of marijuana: Montana, Nevada, Minnesota, and Washington. Three of the States in the lowest quintile of past month prevalence had higher than average ages at first use: Iowa, Tennessee, and Idaho. One night of heavy drinking can impair your ability to think abstractly for up to 30 days, limiting your ability to relate textbook reading to what your professor says, or to think through a football play. Heroin is usually cut with baking soda, powdered milk, baby powder, sugar, starch, or quinine, but has also known to be cut with lidocaine, curry powder, strychi-nine, and even laundry detergent. Law enforcement officials in New York report the existence of heroin cut with a rat poison from Santa Domingo called Tres Pasos(meaning "three steps"). Three is the number of steps the mice take before dying after exposure to the poison. |
Addiction
Addiction is one of the many consequences of so-called 'casual' drug and alcohol abuse. A loss of control over drugs and alcohol can be driven by physical or psychological factors, or sometimes both. Physical addiction takes place when the body comes to need a drug to function normally. If it is not taken, unpleasant withdrawal symptoms occur. The only way to avoid this is to take more of the drug. Psychological addiction takes place when an individual comes to rely on a drug to supply good feelings, such as relaxation, self-confidence, self esteem, and freedom from anxiety. This is not just a casual desire, it's a powerful compulsion.
Therapeutic Community
An effective therapeutic community attends to the many needs of the individual, not just his or her drug use. Care given at a therapeutic community addresses the individual's drug use and associated medical, psychological, social, vocational, and legal problems. Also, a therapeutic community will continue to be flexible and provide ongoing assessments of the individual's needs, which may change during the course of care.
Remaining in care at a therapeutic community for an adequate period of time is critical for treatment effectiveness. The time depends on an individual's needs. For most people, the significant improvement is reached at about 3 months in treatment.
Drug Addiction
Drug addiction is a pattern of repeated drug taking that usually results in tolerance (the need for greater amounts of the drug to achieve the same effect), withdrawal (physical and cognitive effects when drug use declines or stops), and compulsive drug taking behavior (drug taking that persists despite efforts to reduce intake and despite problems with family, friends, and work). Drug addiction encompasses a diverse range of drugs (such as alcohol, cannabis, amphetamines, and cocaine) and is caused by many different factors.
Residential Treatment
Residential treatment offers intensive drug addiction help over a period of weeks or months. This form of treatment has some advantages over out-patient treatment, although it may not be suitable for everyone. For example, those who are responsible for caring for young children may be better suited to attendance at an out patient treatment program. Residential treatment offers a safe, drug and alcohol-free environment where individuals can confront their own drug addiction and associated issues, with the help of qualified staff. Therapy usually consists of a mixture of group counseling, individual counseling and an introduction to the principles of a drug recovery program.
Addict
An addict is an individual who has a compulsive urge to use drugs, to the point where they feel they have no effective choice but to continue use. An addict will continue their self destructive behaviors in order to feel good or to avoid
feeling bad. It can dominate their mind, and keep them coming back for more. The addiction can be
different for each addict, depending on their vice and the kind of person they
are.
