Facts
Ecstasy is generally illegally sold in tablet or capsule form and is consumed orally, although it can be snorted in powder form, injected, or inserted anally as a suppository. The most common form of ecstasy is a small pill, colored and stamped with a logo of some sort. These characteristics can identify a particular batch or manufacturer of ecstasy, and some have nicknames based on the logo that appears on the tablet. After a good experience with a particular dose of ecstasy, the user might search out a pill with the same appearance in hopes that it will generate the same effect. Similarly, ecstasy users disseminate information through web sites and chat-rooms about certain tablets or doses that are known not to contain ecstasy or are known to produce negative effects. However, all ecstasy use is unsafe. Just as drinking and driving create a dangerous mix, illegal drug use poses severe threat of injury to drivers and others on the road with them. A landmark Tennessee study found that over half of drivers stopped by police for reckless driving who tested negative for alcohol use were actually intoxicated with drugs. The drugs most frequently detected were cocaine and marijuana. The United States and many other countries are reporting rising numbers of injured motorists testing positive for marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, or other illegal drugs. These trends probably reflect both real changes in driving under the influence of drugs and the improving capability of police to test drivers for drugs. Amphetamine overdose can also cause cardiac arrhythmias, headaches, convulsions, hypertension, rapid heart rate, coma and death. Amphetamines are psychologically and physically addictive. For an addict, the acquisition and use of the drug is the primary focus of life in spite of negative consequences that are directly attributable to drug use (loss of employment, family, personal relationships, and physical and psychological health). The insatiable compulsive craving for the drug will cause addicts to do almost anything to obtain it. This can include behaviours never considered prior to the addiction. |
Alcoholism
Alcoholism, also known as "alcohol dependence," is a condition that includes craving and continued alcohol abuse despite repeated drinking-related problems, such as losing a job or getting into trouble with the law. It includes four major areas: Craving: - A strong need, or compulsion, to drink. Impaired control: -The inability to limit one's drinking on any given occasion. Physical dependence: -Withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety, when alcohol use is stopped after a period of heavy drinking. Tolerance: - The need for increasing amounts of alcohol in order to feel its effects.
Detox
Detox is necessary when an individual through their chronic use of drugs or alcohol has developed an addiction. The objective of detox is to help the individual achieve a drug and alcohol free state. Detox is intended to relieve the physical symptoms of withdrawal and helps prepare the individual for entry into drug rehabilitation. Therefore, the ultimate goal of detox is preparation for long term recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.
Residential Treatment
Residential treatment offers intensive drug addiction help over a period of weeks or months. This form of treatment has some advantages over out-patient treatment, although it may not be suitable for everyone. For example, those who are responsible for caring for young children may be better suited to attendance at an out patient treatment program. Residential treatment offers a safe, drug and alcohol-free environment where individuals can confront their own drug addiction and associated issues, with the help of qualified staff. Therapy usually consists of a mixture of group counseling, individual counseling and an introduction to the principles of a drug recovery program.
Drug Abuse
Drug abuse is defined as the chronic or habitual use of any chemical substance to alter states of body or mind for other than medically warranted purposes. Drug abuse is a problem which has an effect on people of all income levels,
ages, and stations in life. Quite often the last person to see that there is a
problem is the drug abuser them self. Every year, more and more people become
drug addicts in their pursuit to get "high".
Addiction
Addiction is one of the many consequences of so-called 'casual' drug and alcohol abuse. A loss of control over drugs and alcohol can be driven by physical or psychological factors, or sometimes both. Physical addiction takes place when the body comes to need a drug to function normally. If it is not taken, unpleasant withdrawal symptoms occur. The only way to avoid this is to take more of the drug. Psychological addiction takes place when an individual comes to rely on a drug to supply good feelings, such as relaxation, self-confidence, self esteem, and freedom from anxiety. This is not just a casual desire, it's a powerful compulsion.
