Facts
Southeast Asia. This region produces a high-grade marijuana that became popular in the late 1980s; it is cultivated in Thailand and Laos, then shipped to staging points along Thailand's southern coast, to western Cambodia, and to the coast of Vietnam. Moved by ten-wheel trucks, the product is then loaded onto trawlers and taken to motherships in the Gulf of Thailand. Oceangoing vessels, yachts, and sailing boats have all been used to smuggle the product to the United States, with trans-Pacific shipments occurring in the spring and summer. U.S. traffickers usually control the commerce of marijuana into the United States, off-loadingtheir cargo to smaller faster vessels off the U.S. coast. Patients addicted to barbiturates and benzodiazepines should not attempt to stop taking them on their own. Withdrawal symptoms from these drugs can be problematic, andÑin the case of certain CNS depressants- potentially life-threatening. Although no research regarding the treatment of barbiturate and benzodiazepine addiction exists, addicted patients should undergo medically supervised detoxification because the treatment dose must be gradually tapered. Inpatient or outpatient counseling can help the individual during this process. Cognitivebehavioral therapy, which focuses on modifying the patient's thinking, expectations, and behaviors, while at the same time increasing skills for coping with various life stressors, also has been used successfully to help individuals adapt to the discontinuation of benzodiazepines. It is ironic to note the fact that multitudes of people who are alcohol dependent lead demanding and busy lives and have jobs, vehicles, pets, families, houses, and have numerous possessions similar to individuals who are not alcohol dependent. Many of these “functional” alcohol dependent individuals may have never been cited for drunk driving and may have been lucky enough to avoid all alcohol induced legal difficulties. In spite of this fortunate situation, however, these alcohol addicted people need to drink in order to live on a daily basis while keeping up their facade as they interact with the world outside. Ask anyone who has seen them when they are in a drunken stupor or on an extended bingeing episode or ask a family member about the problem drinker’s alcoholism, nevertheless, and they will be quick to articulate the real truth about the drinker's situation, the essentials about the alcohol dependent individual’s drinking circumstances, and the facts about his or her alcohol produced difficulties. Unfortunately, crack is one of the more dangerous drugs available, due to the short lasting high and its addictiveness. Even when the user doesn´t increase the dosage, there is a tendency to develop sensitivities or allergies to this drug which can cause twitching, paranoia, and hallucinations. It also means that it is possible to overdose on crack even if you are taking the same amount as usual. If the user is injecting crack, there is always the risk of infection at the injection site or contracting HIV or AIDS, among other blood-borne diseases. Most drug addicts don't think much about this possibility when they are suffering from withdrawal and just want one more hit. This lack of logical thinking also leads to stealing and other crimes to get enough money to buy crack, which, in turn, leads to jail time. |
Abstinence
Abstinence is the act or practice of refraining from indulging a desire. The type of abstinence we are referring to here is abstinence from drugs and alcohol. This term has two connotations when it comes to abstaining from drugs. The first refers to drug or alcohol treatment programs that aim to help an individual stop using drugs or alcohol for the rest of their lives. The time abstinence is also used in drug education and prevention. It refers to trying to stop children from ever using drugs.
Detox
Detox is necessary when an individual through their chronic use of drugs or alcohol has developed an addiction. The objective of detox is to help the individual achieve a drug and alcohol free state. Detox is intended to relieve the physical symptoms of withdrawal and helps prepare the individual for entry into drug rehabilitation. Therefore, the ultimate goal of detox is preparation for long term recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.
Tolerance
Tolerance to a drug takes place when an individual is exposed to the same drug repeatedly and begins to build up an resistance to the drugs effects. The body then adapts and develops a tolerance for the drug. The addiction that is produced is so powerful that it creates cravings in the user. These cravings for the drug are the result of its impact on the individual's memory with feelings of pleasantness and euphoria which the individual has come to associate with the taking of the drug.
Drug Side Effects
Drug addiction and abuse comes with a heavy price. There are drastic drug side effects associated with drug misuse and abuse. Drug side effects from legal and illegal drugs can range from mild itching to comas and death. In addition to the physical drug side effects mentioned, there are many psychological drug side effects of drug abuse; the most serious being drug addiction and overdose.
Addiction Treatment
Addiction treatment is needed when an individual finds that they have developed a drug or alcohol addiction which they are not able to successful end on their own. With the help of addiction treatment, addicted individual can get help to control their drug taking behavior and live happy and successful lives. There are several addiction treatment options available for drug and alcohol addiction. Some of these options include self-help groups, counseling, drug rehabilitation programs (in and out-patient), and residential treatment facilities. Each of these differ
in their aims and outcomes and elements of these addiction treatment options are often
