Facts
Methadone was developed in Nazi Germany in 1939 because of wartime shortages of morphine. The German scientists called it Amidon and used it as a painkiller. At the end of World War II (1939–1945), the American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly began clinical trials of the substance. Lilly called it "methadone." The drug has also been marketed as Dolophine, leading to nicknames such as "dolls" and "dollies." Methadone was found to be an effective, long-lasting painkiller and cough suppressant. According to a report issued by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), in 1950 researchers began using methadone to treat the many symptoms of withdrawal associated with heroin dependence. Heroin addicts typically need two to three "FIXES" of the drug each day to ward off the wide range of symptoms that occur when the brain craves opiates. The desperate search to buy the illegal drug leads some addicts into criminal behavior, ranging from theft and burglary to prostitution and drug-dealing. People with opiate addictions feel trapped by their dependency. The desperation is sometimes described as a "monkey on the back." Marijuana is a dangerous substance. A February 2001 article in The British Journal of Psychiatry states that cannabis (marijuana) use can "cause doserelated impairments of psychomotor performance with implications for car and train driving, aeroplane piloting and academic performance." Marijuana cigarettes can be as addictive as nicotine, and the tars from marijuana contain higher levels of some cancer-causing chemicals than tobacco. Additionally, smoking three or four marijuana joints a day can produce the same risk of bronchitis or emphysema as twenty or more tobacco cigarettes. Cocaine is a powerful drug that can be snorted, injected when dissolved in water, ingested, or smoked as crack. It is often referred to as coke, snow, flake, blow, or other terms. Cocaine is highly addictive and dangerous. According to the NIDA about eight percent of high-school seniors have used cocaine. Alcohol consumption can lead to addiction. If the need to drink is constant, then a person may be addicted to alcohol or on the road to addiction. Alcohol can also cause depression. Although initially drinkers may feel a sense of euphoria, it is short lived. In the long-term, heavy drinkers are more likely to suffer from depression because alcohol alters the brain's chemistry. Alcohol also affects memory, even at moderate levels of consumption. |
Therapeutic Community
An effective therapeutic community attends to the many needs of the individual, not just his or her drug use. Care given at a therapeutic community addresses the individual's drug use and associated medical, psychological, social, vocational, and legal problems. Also, a therapeutic community will continue to be flexible and provide ongoing assessments of the individual's needs, which may change during the course of care.
Remaining in care at a therapeutic community for an adequate period of time is critical for treatment effectiveness. The time depends on an individual's needs. For most people, the significant improvement is reached at about 3 months in treatment.
Addict
An addict is an individual who has a compulsive urge to use drugs, to the point where they feel they have no effective choice but to continue use. An addict will continue their self destructive behaviors in order to feel good or to avoid
feeling bad. It can dominate their mind, and keep them coming back for more. The addiction can be
different for each addict, depending on their vice and the kind of person they
are.
Sobriety
Sobriety means the moderation in or abstinence from consumption of alcoholic liquor or use of drugs. When an individual with an addiction problem enters drug rehabilitation, their main goal is to attain long term sobriety. Unfortunately, sometimes drug addicts and alcoholics find they are able to sustain short periods of sobriety followed by a drug or alcohol relapse. This is why attending a drug or alcohol rehab will help the individual maintain their focus on sobriety. Often, it is only by getting help that individuals with severe drug addiction problems are able to achieve lasting sobriety.
Relapse
Relapse is a term used to describe when an individual who has quit using drugs starts using once again. A relapse can mean just a one time use, a long term continues period of using or anything in between after a period of sobriety has taken place. An individual begins to experience a psychological relapse long before their first use after
quitting. Some things that can lead to relapse both physically or psychologically include: 1. Being in the presence of drugs or alcohol, drug or alcohol users, or places where you used or bought chemicals. 2. Feelings we perceive as negative, particularly anger; also sadness, loneliness, guilt, fear, and anxiety. 3. Positive feelings that make you want to celebrate by using. 4. Listening to others past drug use stories and just dwelling on getting high. 5. Believing that you no longer have to worry (complacent). That is, that you are no longer stimulated to crave drugs/alcohol by any of the above situations or by anything else – and therefore maybe it’s safe for you to use occasionally.
Drug Side Effects
Drug addiction and abuse comes with a heavy price. There are drastic drug side effects associated with drug misuse and abuse. Drug side effects from legal and illegal drugs can range from mild itching to comas and death. In addition to the physical drug side effects mentioned, there are many psychological drug side effects of drug abuse; the most serious being drug addiction and overdose.
