Facts
Marijuana. Current marijuana abuse declined 18.1 percent, from 16.6 to 13.6 percent; past-year abuse also declined 13.7 percent, from 27.5 to 23.7 percent; and lifetime abuse declined 11.2 percent, from 35.3 to 31.3 percent. In the past 2 years, students' perceived risk of abusing marijuana increased markedly; the proportion of teens reporting that it would be easy for them to get the drug has also declined. The use of drugs seems to be a feature of more affluent countries. The U.S., which has been driving much of the world's drug research and drug policy agenda, stands out with higher levels of use of alcohol, cocaine, and cannabis, despite punitive illegal drug policies, as well as (in many U.S. states), a higher minimum legal alcohol drinking age than many comparable developed countries. Pregnancy effects: Cocaine use during pregnancy can increase the complications of pregnancy and affect the fetus directly. These abusers may also use other drugs, alcohol, and nicotine, which adversely affect the pregnancy. They have an increased rate of miscarriages, placenta abruption in which the placenta separates from the wall of the uterus and results in stillbirth. There is increasing information that cocaine may cause birth defects with increased rates of malformation, low birth weights, and behavioral abnormalities. Inhalants have a big effect on the role it plays in society. Inhalant abuse can impact families and communities. There is little awareness of inhalants in society because it is not an in-class discussed problem. Children tend to start abusing substances because they either: have easy access to substances, are unsupervised, have a lack of family communication, supervision or curfews. Researchers believe that parents and friends play a big role in inhalant abuse.1 They believe inhalants are just like drugs. Children are most likely not to use them if they are informed how dangerous they are. Friends can also help a person to stop or they can educate him/her on the negative effects of inhalants. Researchers also believe there is a lack of information given by schools about this topic. Only several years ago, most parents did not know of the lethal effects of inhalants. |
Drug Side Effects
Drug addiction and abuse comes with a heavy price. There are drastic drug side effects associated with drug misuse and abuse. Drug side effects from legal and illegal drugs can range from mild itching to comas and death. In addition to the physical drug side effects mentioned, there are many psychological drug side effects of drug abuse; the most serious being drug addiction and overdose.
Intervention
An intervention is when a group of loved ones and/or a trained intervention counselor meets with the person in need of help for the purpose of breaking down their denial and motivating them to immediately seek drug addiction treatment. Often, individuals in the midst of drug addiction engage in a variety of self destructive behaviors. Although baffling to friends and family members such people generally either aren't aware on a conscious level that they have a drug addiction problem, or even when they know they have a problem they may cling to the false belief that the problem will somehow go away without any outside help. When an intervention is held a moment of clarity is created
for the addict. Most people struggling with the problem of drug or alcohol
addiction will accept help the very day of the intervention.
Detox
Detox is necessary when an individual through their chronic use of drugs or alcohol has developed an addiction. The objective of detox is to help the individual achieve a drug and alcohol free state. Detox is intended to relieve the physical symptoms of withdrawal and helps prepare the individual for entry into drug rehabilitation. Therefore, the ultimate goal of detox is preparation for long term recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.
Tolerance
Tolerance to a drug takes place when an individual is exposed to the same drug repeatedly and begins to build up an resistance to the drugs effects. The body then adapts and develops a tolerance for the drug. The addiction that is produced is so powerful that it creates cravings in the user. These cravings for the drug are the result of its impact on the individual's memory with feelings of pleasantness and euphoria which the individual has come to associate with the taking of the drug.
Addict
An addict is an individual who has a compulsive urge to use drugs, to the point where they feel they have no effective choice but to continue use. An addict will continue their self destructive behaviors in order to feel good or to avoid
feeling bad. It can dominate their mind, and keep them coming back for more. The addiction can be
different for each addict, depending on their vice and the kind of person they
are.
