Facts
Meth labs are easily set up in motel rooms, trailers, or the backs of pickup trucks. The traffickers “cook” the chemicals for a few days, then move on, leaving behind toxic waste that can poison the soil and cost tens of thousands of dollars to clean up. The chemicals frequently explode, occasionally killing the “cooks” and innocent people. The majority of labs remain small operations, using “recipes” obtainable over the Internet and elsewhere to cook over-the-counter cold capsules and the like to derive ounces of meth. But federal and California narcotics officers report seeing larger labs in the last few years, which they say are usually run by Mexican nationals. Marijuana is reportedly not physically addictive, although doctors are still divided on this point. About one hundred thousand teenagers each year seek help with marijuana dependence. The dangers of the drug are clear. Ten years ago, marijuana contained about 2 percent THC (the ingredient that provides the high), whereas today's marijuana contains an average of 12 percent, and it could even be as high as 30 percent. Marijuana has four times as much tar as cigarettes, and contains over four hundred compounds that are possibly carcinogenic (cancer-causing). It speeds up the heartbeat, causes short-term memory loss and difficulty in concentration, can cause panic attacks, and increased lethargy. Relapse to drug use is a common occurrence that can be emotionally devastating to the patient. The counselor must communicate to the patient that a relapse to drug use does not mean that the entire treatment program has been a failure. Drug ddiction recovery is definitely not all or nothing. There is a residual savings. When patients relapse, the counselor will want to convey to them that they have lost their "clean time" but not the knowledge and experience gained during their treatment process. The counselor should educate the patient about relapse and about the importance of taking corrective and positive action rather than being overwhelmed by feelings of depression or failure. Most episodes of drug use can be managed without seriously interrupting the treatment process. They can be used in a positive and enlightening way to strengthen the recovery process. In dealing with a relapse, the counselor should use the general principle that relapse is caused by failure to follow one's recovery program. Thus, the counselor should identify where the patient deviated from his or her recovery plan and encourage the patient to recommit to the recovery program. There is a relationship between crack and powder cocaine. Cocaine arrives in the United States from Columbia in the form of powder cocaine (cocaine hydrochloride). Crack is then made in the United States by mixing powder cocaine and sodium bicarbonate. The resulting precipitate is dried and cut into "rocks." Five hundred grams of powder cocaine can be converted into 445 grams of crack or between 4,550–17,800 doses. Without powder cocaine, there would be no crack. |
Drug Addiction
Drug addiction is a pattern of repeated drug taking that usually results in tolerance (the need for greater amounts of the drug to achieve the same effect), withdrawal (physical and cognitive effects when drug use declines or stops), and compulsive drug taking behavior (drug taking that persists despite efforts to reduce intake and despite problems with family, friends, and work). Drug addiction encompasses a diverse range of drugs (such as alcohol, cannabis, amphetamines, and cocaine) and is caused by many different factors.
Intervention
An intervention is when a group of loved ones and/or a trained intervention counselor meets with the person in need of help for the purpose of breaking down their denial and motivating them to immediately seek drug addiction treatment. Often, individuals in the midst of drug addiction engage in a variety of self destructive behaviors. Although baffling to friends and family members such people generally either aren't aware on a conscious level that they have a drug addiction problem, or even when they know they have a problem they may cling to the false belief that the problem will somehow go away without any outside help. When an intervention is held a moment of clarity is created
for the addict. Most people struggling with the problem of drug or alcohol
addiction will accept help the very day of the intervention.
Therapeutic Community
An effective therapeutic community attends to the many needs of the individual, not just his or her drug use. Care given at a therapeutic community addresses the individual's drug use and associated medical, psychological, social, vocational, and legal problems. Also, a therapeutic community will continue to be flexible and provide ongoing assessments of the individual's needs, which may change during the course of care.
Remaining in care at a therapeutic community for an adequate period of time is critical for treatment effectiveness. The time depends on an individual's needs. For most people, the significant improvement is reached at about 3 months in treatment.
Withdrawal
Withdrawal is what happens when a person who is addicted to drugs or alcohol discontinues use. There are numerous symptoms that take place both physically and emotionally when an addicted individual stops using. Withdrawal can last a few days to a few weeks and may include nausea or vomiting, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety. Keep in mind; this only occurs if a person has regular, heavy use of a drug or alcohol. Withdrawal can be extremely uncomfortable without professional help. Treatment for withdrawal from alcohol or drugs may require a medical professional to be present. Drug and alcohol rehabilitation is often the best way to overcome withdrawal and its symptoms as well as recovery from drug addiction.
Drug Rehabilitation
Drug rehabilitation is a place or program that an individual enters to treat a drug or alcohol addiction. Through therapy and education, the individual is restored to their former non-drug using self. They are then able to re-enter society clean and sober. There are many reasons why a person would need to attend a drug rehabilitation program. Some of the many reasons are: the inability to control their drinking or drug use, alienating their friends and family, problems with the law, and problems at work. Also, there are several different types of drug rehabilitation programs available: inpatient, outpatient, residential, short-term, and long-term.
