Facts
Hydrocodone or dihydrocodeinone is a semi-synthetic opioid derived from two of the naturally occurring opiates, codeine and thebaine. Hydrocodone is an orally active narcotic analgesic and antitussive. It is commonly available in tablet, capsule, and syrup form and is often compounded with other analgesics like acetaminophen or ibuprofen. It is marketed, in its varying forms, under a number of trademarks, including Vicodin, Symtan, Anexsia, Dicodid, Hycodan (or generically Hydromet), Hycomine, Hycet, Lorcet, Lortab, Norco, Novahistex, Hydroco, Tussionex, Gentex, Vicoprofen, Xodol, Bekadid, Calmodid, Codinovo, Duodin, Kolikodol, Orthoxycol, Mercodinone, Synkonin, Norgan, and Hydrokon. Hydrocodone was first synthesized in Germany in 1920 and was approved by the FDA on 23 March 1943 for sale in the United States under the brand name Hycodan. Based on reports from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, nations in the Americas seized the majority of cocaine in 2003, accounting for 87% of the world’s seizures. These statistics are similar to the data supplied to the General Secretariat from member states. European nations follow with 13% of seizures. The United States seized the greatest amount of cocaine, followed by Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Mexico and Brazil. Complications in Older People. As people age, it takes fewer drinks to become intoxicated, and organs can be damaged by smaller amounts of alcohol than in younger people. Also, up to one-half of the 100 most prescribed drugs for older people react adversely with alcohol. The problem of substance use is more pronounced among adolescents in contact with the juvenile justice system. Recent survey results among youthful arrestees provide evidence of illegal drug use. For example, more than half of juvenile male arrestees tested positive for at least one drug; marijuana was the most frequently detected drug. 60 to 87 percent of female offenders need substance abuse treatment. Among youthful arrestees, marijuana use increased from 25% in 1991 to 62% in 1999; it appears to have become the drug of choice among youth who get in trouble with law enforcement, nearly at the height of the drug war, 31 out of every 100,000 youth were admitted to state prisons for drug offenses'; by 1996, that figure had jumped to 122 per 100,000 youth, representing a 291 percent increase in one decade. Consistent with national trends, the state of California has significant problems providing drug treatment for youth offenders because there are not enough available treatment slots. In fact, the California Youth Authority indicated that 60-75% its wards are at risk of developing substance abuse problems. Several publications cite the effectiveness of drug treatment in reducing drug use and decreasing criminal activity during and after treatment. |
Addiction Treatment
Addiction treatment is needed when an individual finds that they have developed a drug or alcohol addiction which they are not able to successful end on their own. With the help of addiction treatment, addicted individual can get help to control their drug taking behavior and live happy and successful lives. There are several addiction treatment options available for drug and alcohol addiction. Some of these options include self-help groups, counseling, drug rehabilitation programs (in and out-patient), and residential treatment facilities. Each of these differ
in their aims and outcomes and elements of these addiction treatment options are often
combined.
Tolerance
Tolerance to a drug takes place when an individual is exposed to the same drug repeatedly and begins to build up an resistance to the drugs effects. The body then adapts and develops a tolerance for the drug. The addiction that is produced is so powerful that it creates cravings in the user. These cravings for the drug are the result of its impact on the individual's memory with feelings of pleasantness and euphoria which the individual has come to associate with the taking of the drug.
Therapeutic Community
An effective therapeutic community attends to the many needs of the individual, not just his or her drug use. Care given at a therapeutic community addresses the individual's drug use and associated medical, psychological, social, vocational, and legal problems. Also, a therapeutic community will continue to be flexible and provide ongoing assessments of the individual's needs, which may change during the course of care.
Remaining in care at a therapeutic community for an adequate period of time is critical for treatment effectiveness. The time depends on an individual's needs. For most people, the significant improvement is reached at about 3 months in treatment.
Addiction
Addiction is one of the many consequences of so-called 'casual' drug and alcohol abuse. A loss of control over drugs and alcohol can be driven by physical or psychological factors, or sometimes both. Physical addiction takes place when the body comes to need a drug to function normally. If it is not taken, unpleasant withdrawal symptoms occur. The only way to avoid this is to take more of the drug. Psychological addiction takes place when an individual comes to rely on a drug to supply good feelings, such as relaxation, self-confidence, self esteem, and freedom from anxiety. This is not just a casual desire, it's a powerful compulsion.
Drug Side Effects
Drug addiction and abuse comes with a heavy price. There are drastic drug side effects associated with drug misuse and abuse. Drug side effects from legal and illegal drugs can range from mild itching to comas and death. In addition to the physical drug side effects mentioned, there are many psychological drug side effects of drug abuse; the most serious being drug addiction and overdose.
