Facts
Rohypnol has increasingly been linked to incidents of date rape and rape by strangers who drug unsuspecting women by slipping the pill into their drink in a bar or other social setting. Rohypnol is appealing to rapists because it acts so rapidly and often causes a loss of will and an inability of victims to fight back. Rape is devastating to women and affects all aspects of their lives, including their future relationships. It is estimated that approximately one in four women will be raped in their lifetimes. In addition, approximately 75% of all rapes that occur are date or acquaintance rapes in which women report knowing their attacker well or at least being familiar with them. Many times, the rapist is someone with whom the woman is romantically involved or has been involved with in the past, but the sex is not consensual. The best defense against drug-induced date rape is to become educated about which drugs are used to commit sexual assaults and how to recognize and avoid them. The THC content may vary greatly, depending on the genetic strain of the plant, the part of the plant involved (for example, the leaves or the flowers), and the maturity of the plant. The THC content of plants used for hemp production, such as those that grow wild in the U.S. Midwest, may be negligible to zero; marijuana produced from plants known for high drug content, such as sensemilla, may contain 2 to 3 percent THC. Manicured plants, from which the leaves are carefully separated and only the new leaves used for drug effect, may contain 3 to 4 percent THC. Hashish, which represents the ultimate in manicuring, generally contains 4 to 8 percent THC. Prevention programs must be based on a thorough, continuing assessment of local community needs, and the effectiveness and impact of these programs must be continually assessed. Because the nature and extent of drug abuse and the HIV/AIDS epidemic vary widely, prevention strategies must be adapted to local community needs and resources. Local drug use and HIV/AIDS risk-behavior patterns must be tracked to refine program approaches over time and to evaluate program outcomes. Child welfare workers are increasingly coming into contact with methamphetamine users and laboratories, and find themselves in a unique position where they are concerned for their own safety as well as that of others. The following principles are derived from the empirical literature and are guidelines for child welfare workers to use in homes where methamphetamine use or production is suspected. While one indicator alone may not constitute concern for a worker, several indicators together may alert the worker to seek additional assistance and take safety precautions. Without the necessary training and information about methamphetamine, a routine home visit may expose child welfare workers to a host of dangerous toxins. It is imperative workers are equipped with the knowledge to identify the effects and indicators of methamphetamine use and production. Workers should conduct a thorough assessment of the (1) environment for production, (2) parental behavior and dangers associated with it, and (3) child behavior, risk of maltreatment, and level of contamination. |
Dependence
Dependence is the compulsive use of a substance despite negative consequences which can be severe; drug dependence is simply excessive use of a drug or use of a drug for purposes for which it was not medically intended. Physical dependence on a substance (needing a drug to function) is not necessary or sufficient to define addiction. There are some substances that don't cause addiction but do cause physical dependence (for example, some blood pressure medications) and substances that cause addiction but not classic physical dependence (cocaine withdrawal, for example, it does not have symptoms like vomiting and chills; it is mainly characterized by depression).
Addiction Treatment
Addiction treatment is needed when an individual finds that they have developed a drug or alcohol addiction which they are not able to successful end on their own. With the help of addiction treatment, addicted individual can get help to control their drug taking behavior and live happy and successful lives. There are several addiction treatment options available for drug and alcohol addiction. Some of these options include self-help groups, counseling, drug rehabilitation programs (in and out-patient), and residential treatment facilities. Each of these differ
in their aims and outcomes and elements of these addiction treatment options are often
combined.
Detox
Detox is necessary when an individual through their chronic use of drugs or alcohol has developed an addiction. The objective of detox is to help the individual achieve a drug and alcohol free state. Detox is intended to relieve the physical symptoms of withdrawal and helps prepare the individual for entry into drug rehabilitation. Therefore, the ultimate goal of detox is preparation for long term recovery from drug and alcohol addiction.
Abstinence
Abstinence is the act or practice of refraining from indulging a desire. The type of abstinence we are referring to here is abstinence from drugs and alcohol. This term has two connotations when it comes to abstaining from drugs. The first refers to drug or alcohol treatment programs that aim to help an individual stop using drugs or alcohol for the rest of their lives. The time abstinence is also used in drug education and prevention. It refers to trying to stop children from ever using drugs.
Withdrawal
Withdrawal is what happens when a person who is addicted to drugs or alcohol discontinues use. There are numerous symptoms that take place both physically and emotionally when an addicted individual stops using. Withdrawal can last a few days to a few weeks and may include nausea or vomiting, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety. Keep in mind; this only occurs if a person has regular, heavy use of a drug or alcohol. Withdrawal can be extremely uncomfortable without professional help. Treatment for withdrawal from alcohol or drugs may require a medical professional to be present. Drug and alcohol rehabilitation is often the best way to overcome withdrawal and its symptoms as well as recovery from drug addiction.
