Facts
Ecstasy use originally was associated with certain subcultures, such as people involved in New Age spirituality, the dance club scene, gay men, followers of the Grateful Dead, and college students. This is no longer the case, as ecstasy use has become more mainstream in popular culture. Children and child welfare workers may be injured by direct contact with methamphetamine by ingestion or through exposure to the manufacturing process. The chemicals used in manufacturing easily explode, causing burns, lung damage, death, and toxic vapors. Immediate effects of exposure to methamphetamine production may result in burning of the eyes and skin, dizziness, nausea, and headaches. Inhalation of chemicals and vapors associated with the manufac- ture of methamphetamine may result in shortness of breath, cough, and chest pain, and may cause dizziness, intoxication, nausea, disorientation, coordination problems, and respiratory problems. Marijuana is reportedly not physically addictive, although doctors are still divided on this point. About one hundred thousand teenagers each year seek help with marijuana dependence. The dangers of the drug are clear. Ten years ago, marijuana contained about 2 percent THC (the ingredient that provides the high), whereas today's marijuana contains an average of 12 percent, and it could even be as high as 30 percent. Marijuana has four times as much tar as cigarettes, and contains over four hundred compounds that are possibly carcinogenic (cancer-causing). It speeds up the heartbeat, causes short-term memory loss and difficulty in concentration, can cause panic attacks, and increased lethargy. 20.7% of college students report being frequent binge drinkers, and 21.9% report being occasional binge drinkers. |
Sobriety
Sobriety means the moderation in or abstinence from consumption of alcoholic liquor or use of drugs. When an individual with an addiction problem enters drug rehabilitation, their main goal is to attain long term sobriety. Unfortunately, sometimes drug addicts and alcoholics find they are able to sustain short periods of sobriety followed by a drug or alcohol relapse. This is why attending a drug or alcohol rehab will help the individual maintain their focus on sobriety. Often, it is only by getting help that individuals with severe drug addiction problems are able to achieve lasting sobriety.
Addiction Treatment
Addiction treatment is needed when an individual finds that they have developed a drug or alcohol addiction which they are not able to successful end on their own. With the help of addiction treatment, addicted individual can get help to control their drug taking behavior and live happy and successful lives. There are several addiction treatment options available for drug and alcohol addiction. Some of these options include self-help groups, counseling, drug rehabilitation programs (in and out-patient), and residential treatment facilities. Each of these differ
in their aims and outcomes and elements of these addiction treatment options are often
combined.
Dependence
Dependence is the compulsive use of a substance despite negative consequences which can be severe; drug dependence is simply excessive use of a drug or use of a drug for purposes for which it was not medically intended. Physical dependence on a substance (needing a drug to function) is not necessary or sufficient to define addiction. There are some substances that don't cause addiction but do cause physical dependence (for example, some blood pressure medications) and substances that cause addiction but not classic physical dependence (cocaine withdrawal, for example, it does not have symptoms like vomiting and chills; it is mainly characterized by depression).
Tolerance
Tolerance to a drug takes place when an individual is exposed to the same drug repeatedly and begins to build up an resistance to the drugs effects. The body then adapts and develops a tolerance for the drug. The addiction that is produced is so powerful that it creates cravings in the user. These cravings for the drug are the result of its impact on the individual's memory with feelings of pleasantness and euphoria which the individual has come to associate with the taking of the drug.
Drug Rehabilitation
Drug rehabilitation is a place or program that an individual enters to treat a drug or alcohol addiction. Through therapy and education, the individual is restored to their former non-drug using self. They are then able to re-enter society clean and sober. There are many reasons why a person would need to attend a drug rehabilitation program. Some of the many reasons are: the inability to control their drinking or drug use, alienating their friends and family, problems with the law, and problems at work. Also, there are several different types of drug rehabilitation programs available: inpatient, outpatient, residential, short-term, and long-term.
