Drug Threat in Westfield
Sources
Drug Situation: Cocaine and Heroin continue to be the primary drugs of abuse
in the city of Massachusetts as Colombian and Dominican traffickers dominate
the distribution throughout the city. OxyContin continues to be an extremely
popular heroin substitute as well as its use in conjunction with MDMA.
Cocaine: Cocaine is readily available from the gram to kilogram quantities throughout the city. New York is the primary source area, with other source areas to include Florida and the Southwest Border. Cocaine is transported in multi-kilogram quantities via commercial transit, tractor trailers, and vehicles equipped with hidden compartments. It is also imported via mail services. Importers are of Colombian and Dominican origin, with retail distribution among all ethnic groups. Cocaine prices continue to be stable, with slight decreases in purity levels noted. Crack Cocaine is obtained from New York, Florida, Puerto Rico and is converted locally as well. African -American violators and street gang members continue to dominate the drugs’ distribution. Abuse remains widespread and crack continues to be reported as the drug of choice within Boston city limits.
Heroin: High-quality heroin is available from gram to kilogram quantities throughout the city. Historically, New York has been the primary source area, entering by intercity highway via public and privately operated vehicles equipped with hidden compartments. More recently, in the past few years, there has been an increase in heroin seizures where the heroin came directly from a source country. The primary suppliers are of Colombian and Dominican origin, with retail distribution among all ethnic groups. Heroin distribution and use occurs throughout the city and prices remain extremely low at both the wholesale and retail level. Abuse is widespread, with continued reports of heroin overdose deaths and incidences attributed to heroin purity levels routinely exceeding 60%.
Methamphetamine: Methamphetamine has a limited availability in Massachusetts, transported into the area via express mail packages from California. Recent seizures reflect the availability of crystal methamphetamine. Methamphetamine is reportedly abused at “rave” parties by young adults between the ages of 18 to 25; however, individuals in their late 30s to early 40s also abuse it.
Club Drugs: In the city of Massachusetts, MDMA and ketamine are readily available. MDMA is found at rave parties, legitimate nightclubs, and on college campuses across the city. The majority of the MDMA seen in the city originated from couriers traveling by commercial airlines or express mail deliveries from sources in Western Europe and New York. A number of seizures have involved MDMA originating from Canada. Ketamine has been diverted from legitimate sources such as veterinary clinics and abused at legitimate nightclubs across the city, particularly in the greater Boston area. Ketamine seems to be one of several drugs, along with MDMA and GHB that are popular in the “rave” scene. GHB is widely available, particularly in Western Massachusetts.
Marijuana: Marijuana remains readily available in all areas of the city with the majority of product originating in Mexico or the Southwestern United citys; however, marijuana of both Colombian and Jamaican origin has been encountered. Personal use quantities of hashish continue to arrive in Boston, MA on flights from the Netherlands and other source countries. The majority of the marijuana is predominantly imported from the southwest border via aircraft, land vehicles, and delivery services. Domestically grown marijuana is found in all areas of Massachusetts, from the extreme western part of the city all the way out to Nantucket Island.
Other Drugs: Oxycodone products continue to be diverted in the city. Percocet, Roxicet and OxyContin are readily available in Massachusetts. Oxycontin, diverted from legitimate distributors, is frequently imported into Massachusetts from Mexico. Traffickers are also diverting OxyContin express mail shipments into the greater Boston area. Well-organized doctor shopping rings forged and/or altered prescriptions and diversion from individuals’ prescriptions are the most commonly found diversion methods in the city. An increasing number of pharmacy burglaries and armed robberies have been attributed to the increase in OxyContin abuse.
DEA Mobile Enforcement Teams: This cooperative program with city and local law enforcement counterparts was conceived in 1995 in response to the overwhelming problem of drug-related violent crime in towns and cities across the nation. There have been 409 deployments completed resulting in 16,763 arrests of violent drug criminals as of February 2004. There have been 16 MET deployments in the city of Massachusetts since the inception of the program: Lynn, Revere, Webster, Springfield, Lawrence, Everett, Fitchburg, Southbridge, Greenfield, Holyoke, Framingham, Worcester (2), Boston (2), and Provincetown.
DEA Regional Enforcement Teams: This program was designed to augment existing DEA division resources by targeting drug organizations operating in the United citys where there is a lack of sufficient local drug law enforcement. This Program was conceived in 1999 in response to the threat posed by drug trafficking organizations that have established networks of cells to conduct drug trafficking operations in smaller, non-traditional trafficking locations in the United citys. Nationwide, there have been 22 deployments completed resulting in 608 arrests of drug trafficking criminals as of February 2004. There have been no RET deployments in the city of Massachusetts.
Drug Courts/Treatment Centers: Based on information from the 2000 National Survey of Substance Abuse Treatment Services, there are 356 substance abuse treatment centers in Massachusetts. There are twenty drug courts across the city.
Because drug rehabilitation is both a multi-phase and multi-faceted process it is not surprising that it is often a long term process as well. When an individual enters into drug rehab the very first step is often detoxification. Their physical detoxification alone is not sufficient to end their drug addiction but it does help significantly in the rehabilitation process. Attending a drug rehab will help the individual gain tools that are invaluable in their recovery process. These tools will help them face difficult situations such as encountering friends from their using days, returning to old environments they may have used drugs in, as well as familiar smells and objects that bring up using memories. These psychological stressors can often be detrimental in the recovery process and make it very difficult for the individual to completely recover from their drug addiction.
Often, individuals feel that they can handle quitting drugs on their own. Their attempts are often unsuccessful leaving them feeling down and depressed. Self detoxification can be next to impossible for many. This is often because of changes in their brain functioning that they are not even aware of. When an individual uses drugs for an extended period of time, research has shown that substantial changes take place in the individual’s brain functioning. These changes make it much more difficult for the individual to go without using drugs and cope with day to day life. It is important for both the individual and their family to realize that it takes more than just strong will power to conquer drug addiction. It takes professional help from a drug rehab program to give the individual all those before mentioned invaluable tools to make a complete recovery from drug addiction.
Drug Rehab, Westfield, Massachusetts, MAThe ultimate goal of a drug rehab in Westfield is to enable the individual to achieve lasting abstinence from drug use. The short term goal of a drug rehab in Westfield is to help the individual through detox and withdrawal from drugs in addition to improving their ability to function in society again. A drug rehab will help minimize the medical and social complications of drug abuse.
Patients who stay in a Westfield drug rehab longer than 3 months typically have better outcomes than those who stay less time. Those who go through medically assisted withdrawal to minimize discomfort but do not receive any further rehab, perform about the same in terms of their substance use as those who never attended a drug rehab in Westfield. Over the last 25 years, studies have shown that attending a Westfield drug rehab works to reduce drug intake and crimes committed by drug-dependent people. Researchers also have found that drug abusers who have been through a drug rehab are more likely to have jobs.
Inpatient Drug Rehab, Westfield, Massachusetts, MAInpatient drug rehab in Westfield is one of many methods whose ultimate goal is long-term abstinence from drugs and alcohol. Those who attend an inpatient drug rehab in Westfield use the new tools they have learned to help them re-enter society and lead responsible, successful drug and alcohol free lives.
Inpatient drug rehab centers in Westfield offer support and structure for men and women seeking help for problems with drugs or alcohol. Participants reside on location for the course of the rehab program; lengths of stay vary and may be individualized. Care at an inpatient drug rehab in Westfield is provided 24 hours a day 7 days a week; this is only one of the benefits of attending a inpatient drug rehab.
Outpatient Drug Rehab, Westfield, Massachusetts, MAAn outpatient drug rehab in Westfield is a program designed to provide long-term abstinence from drugs and alcohol. Outpatient drug rehab programs in Westfield use a broad verity of techniques. These techniques include a wide range of approaches including problem-solving groups, specialized therapies such as insight-oriented psychotherapy, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and 12-step programs. Similar to other drug rehabs, the individual may stay in the program for several months or longer. Those who attend an outpatient drug rehab in Westfield do not live at the drug rehab as they would an inpatient drug rehab.
Outpatient drug rehab programs in Westfield vary in the types and intensity of services offered. Low-intensity outpatient drug rehab programs may offer little more than drug education and counsel. Other outpatient drug rehab models, such as intensive day treatment, can be comparable to residential programs in services and effectiveness, depending on the individual's characteristics and needs. All in all, the ultimate goal of an outpatient drug rehab in Westfield is to help the individual recover from drug addiction so that they may re-enter society and lead responsible, successful drug and alcohol free lives.
Alcohol Rehab, Westfield, Massachusetts, MAAlcohol rehab in Westfield is a place where an individual who has a drinking problem can receive help. Rehab is a program that helps the individual with their alcohol addiction and provides them with the tools necessary for a complete recovery.
Alcohol rehab in Westfield works for many people who have problems with alcohol abuse. But just like any other drug of abuse, the individual has to be committed to make a change for the better. Some people stop drinking and remain sober. Others have long periods of sobriety with bouts of relapse. And still others cannot stop drinking for any length of time. With alcohol rehab, one thing is clear: the longer a person abstains from alcohol, the more likely he or she will be able to stay sober.
Drug Detox, Westfield, Massachusetts, MAThe goal of detox in Westfield is to rid the body of toxins accumulated by drug use. The first step of detox is drug withdrawal. Drug withdrawal is "the act or process of ceasing to use an addictive drug." Once an individual has discontinued using drugs physical and behavioral withdrawal symptoms may follow. Detox in Westfield is a process that helps diminish the uncomfortable symptoms of drug withdrawal.
Detox is performed in many different ways depending on where you decide to receive treatment. Most detox centers in Westfield simply provide treatment to avoid physical withdrawal to alcohol & other drugs. A quality detox program will not only to provide the individual with counseling during detox but help with the physical withdrawal and the psychological root cause of the individual's addiction problem, so as to decrease the chances of relapse.
Drug detox can be viewed in three separate stages:
1. Medical Detox: A medical doctor will need to supervise your medical withdrawal from drugs, ensuring you complete this phase safely and with minimal complications. Medical detox can take several days.
2. Physical Detox: Once your body is no longer dependent on drugs, you will need to work on building up your physical health. A nutritionist can be helpful during this phase, enabling you to develop a balanced diet to help you through the rest of the detox process.
3. Emotional Detox: Detox can be extremely difficult on your emotional health, which is why most treatment centers offer counseling during detox. Because drugs have become an integral part of your mental, emotional and social life, you will need emotional help as you detox.
