Facts
According to reports, nearly half of the new AIDS cases are related to the use of crystal meth. Street Terms Its important to know some of the terms that someone might use when referring to crystal meth. Slang, or street terms used are: Batu, blade, Cristy, crystal glass, Hanyak, Hiropon, hot ice, Kaksonjae, L.A. glass, L.A. ice, quartz, Shabu, shards, stove top, super ice, Tina, Ventana, and Vidrio. The standard types, or mixes, are a rough yellow substance called Hydro, and Glass which is a smooth white blend. According to the 2007 Monitoring the Future survey—a national survey of 8th-, 10th-, and 12th-graders—cocaine use among students did not increase significantly, though it remained at unacceptably high levels: 3.1 percent of 8th-graders, 5.3 percent of 10th-graders, and 7.8 percent of 12th-graders have tried cocaine; 0.9 percent of 8th-graders, 1.3 percent of 10th-graders, and 2.0 percent of 12th-graders were current (past-month) cocaine users. Ecstasy overdose is usually characterized by an extremely elevated body temperature, heart rate, and blood pressure. Combining ecstasy with other drugs may or may not be intentional, since the true contents of an ecstasy tablet or capsule are rarely known to the user. For example, PMA, sold with or in place of MDMA as ecstasy, takes nearly four times longer than MDMA to take effect; therefore the user might take extra doses thinking the original was not adequate. Multiple doses, coupled with the toxic effects PMA has on the heart, can have tragic consequences. A number of test-tube studies, using both human and animal material, suggest that cell-mediated immunity (the capacity of white blood cells to fight invading bacteria, viruses, or cancer cells) may be decreased after exposure to Cannabis. Clinically, one might assume that sustained impairment of cell-mediated immunity might lead to increased opportunistic infections or to increased prevalence of cancer, as seen in the current epidemic of ACQUIRED IMMUNODEFICIENCY SYNDROME (AIDS). No such clinical evidence has been discovered. |
Intervention
An intervention is when a group of loved ones and/or a trained intervention counselor meets with the person in need of help for the purpose of breaking down their denial and motivating them to immediately seek drug addiction treatment. Often, individuals in the midst of drug addiction engage in a variety of self destructive behaviors. Although baffling to friends and family members such people generally either aren't aware on a conscious level that they have a drug addiction problem, or even when they know they have a problem they may cling to the false belief that the problem will somehow go away without any outside help. When an intervention is held a moment of clarity is created
for the addict. Most people struggling with the problem of drug or alcohol
addiction will accept help the very day of the intervention.
Addiction Treatment
Addiction treatment is needed when an individual finds that they have developed a drug or alcohol addiction which they are not able to successful end on their own. With the help of addiction treatment, addicted individual can get help to control their drug taking behavior and live happy and successful lives. There are several addiction treatment options available for drug and alcohol addiction. Some of these options include self-help groups, counseling, drug rehabilitation programs (in and out-patient), and residential treatment facilities. Each of these differ
in their aims and outcomes and elements of these addiction treatment options are often
combined.
Drug Addiction
Drug addiction is a pattern of repeated drug taking that usually results in tolerance (the need for greater amounts of the drug to achieve the same effect), withdrawal (physical and cognitive effects when drug use declines or stops), and compulsive drug taking behavior (drug taking that persists despite efforts to reduce intake and despite problems with family, friends, and work). Drug addiction encompasses a diverse range of drugs (such as alcohol, cannabis, amphetamines, and cocaine) and is caused by many different factors.
Addiction
Addiction is one of the many consequences of so-called 'casual' drug and alcohol abuse. A loss of control over drugs and alcohol can be driven by physical or psychological factors, or sometimes both. Physical addiction takes place when the body comes to need a drug to function normally. If it is not taken, unpleasant withdrawal symptoms occur. The only way to avoid this is to take more of the drug. Psychological addiction takes place when an individual comes to rely on a drug to supply good feelings, such as relaxation, self-confidence, self esteem, and freedom from anxiety. This is not just a casual desire, it's a powerful compulsion.
Withdrawal
Withdrawal is what happens when a person who is addicted to drugs or alcohol discontinues use. There are numerous symptoms that take place both physically and emotionally when an addicted individual stops using. Withdrawal can last a few days to a few weeks and may include nausea or vomiting, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety. Keep in mind; this only occurs if a person has regular, heavy use of a drug or alcohol. Withdrawal can be extremely uncomfortable without professional help. Treatment for withdrawal from alcohol or drugs may require a medical professional to be present. Drug and alcohol rehabilitation is often the best way to overcome withdrawal and its symptoms as well as recovery from drug addiction.
