Facts
Unfortunately, despite popular belief, marijuana is not as safe as it seems. In fact, it is downright dangerous, particularly with extended use. Most teens who try pot once continue to use it on a fairly regular basis, with roughly a third of users smoking or ingesting marijuana at least 20 days a month. The toxins contained in marijuana are actually worse than many of the ones in tobacco when smoked and can do just as much damage. While marijuana is often used as a treatment for cancer, it can actually cause it. Apart from that, this drug has many other nasty effects that few people talk about. Short term use can cause some relatively minor issues, like forgetfulness, a loss of motor skills, and difficulties solving problems. Many teens who use marijuana end up doing very poorly in school because of these effects. For some people, ecstasy can be addictive. A survey of young adult and adolescent ecstasy users found that 43 percent of those who reported ecstasy use met the accepted diagnostic criteria for dependence, as evidenced by continued use despite knowledge of physical or psychological harm, withdrawal effects, and tolerance (or diminished response). Rehabs offering conventional and clinically based therapeutic care encompass the bulk of private rehab options in America today. These rehabs run programs on average from 28 days to three months in duration, and offer a variety of treatments that can include 12 steps based group meetings, peer support groups, individual therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, family therapy and nutritional and health education and programming. These rehabs offer the greatest intensity of scientifically proven therapies and treatments and can be found at all price ranges, although are normally higher cost options. These rehabs can offer a great base for sobriety, although you should look for a facility that offers intense and wide ranging therapeutic programming. Of the major racial/ethnic groups, the rate of drug use is highest among the American Indian/Native American population (10.6%) and those reporting mixed race (11.2%), followed by African Americans (7.7%), Hispanics (6.8%), whites (6.6%). The lowest rates are found among the Asian population. (3.2%). |
Alcoholism
Alcoholism, also known as "alcohol dependence," is a condition that includes craving and continued alcohol abuse despite repeated drinking-related problems, such as losing a job or getting into trouble with the law. It includes four major areas: Craving: - A strong need, or compulsion, to drink. Impaired control: -The inability to limit one's drinking on any given occasion. Physical dependence: -Withdrawal symptoms, such as nausea, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety, when alcohol use is stopped after a period of heavy drinking. Tolerance: - The need for increasing amounts of alcohol in order to feel its effects.
Intervention
An intervention is when a group of loved ones and/or a trained intervention counselor meets with the person in need of help for the purpose of breaking down their denial and motivating them to immediately seek drug addiction treatment. Often, individuals in the midst of drug addiction engage in a variety of self destructive behaviors. Although baffling to friends and family members such people generally either aren't aware on a conscious level that they have a drug addiction problem, or even when they know they have a problem they may cling to the false belief that the problem will somehow go away without any outside help. When an intervention is held a moment of clarity is created
for the addict. Most people struggling with the problem of drug or alcohol
addiction will accept help the very day of the intervention.
Addict
An addict is an individual who has a compulsive urge to use drugs, to the point where they feel they have no effective choice but to continue use. An addict will continue their self destructive behaviors in order to feel good or to avoid
feeling bad. It can dominate their mind, and keep them coming back for more. The addiction can be
different for each addict, depending on their vice and the kind of person they
are.
Addiction Treatment
Addiction treatment is needed when an individual finds that they have developed a drug or alcohol addiction which they are not able to successful end on their own. With the help of addiction treatment, addicted individual can get help to control their drug taking behavior and live happy and successful lives. There are several addiction treatment options available for drug and alcohol addiction. Some of these options include self-help groups, counseling, drug rehabilitation programs (in and out-patient), and residential treatment facilities. Each of these differ
in their aims and outcomes and elements of these addiction treatment options are often
combined.
Drug Side Effects
Drug addiction and abuse comes with a heavy price. There are drastic drug side effects associated with drug misuse and abuse. Drug side effects from legal and illegal drugs can range from mild itching to comas and death. In addition to the physical drug side effects mentioned, there are many psychological drug side effects of drug abuse; the most serious being drug addiction and overdose.
