Facts
PCC, a common by-product of PCP's illicit manufacture (sometimes accounting for 10–25% of the mixture), causes abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and in sufficient doses, coma. PCC is an unstable compound, degrading to piperidine. Contaminated batches of PCP can sometimes be recognized by a strong fishy odor. When heated, as when it is smoked and inhaled, PCC liberates hydrogen cyanide, so cyanide poisoning in PCP smokers is also a strong possibility. Although community service is a common form of punishment for a DUI conviction, it has not been found to be successful in deterring drunk drivers. Usually, a lawyer uses community service as a means of negotiation in order to mitigate a jail sentence, penalties, or fines. This gives offenders the chance to give back to the community and pay for their crime by doing something beneficial for society. Sometimes, offenders are given the chance to choose the charity where they spend time volunteering, particularly if it is the offender's first DUI offense. In many cases, however, the judge orders the offender to complete his or her community service by volunteering at victims' rights groups, particularly for victims of drunk driving. No matter how a person spends his or her community service time, the service is done under the supervision of a probation officer, and all of the hours must be recorded. Offenders must be able to prove to the court that they have completed the total specified number of hours. The total number of hours of community service that a person can be ordered to perform varies from state to state and also depends on the conditions of the arrest. Some states require a minimum sentence of at least 50 community service hours for a first-time conviction. In other states, the sentence for a first-time conviction can be as little as 24 hours or as much as 100 hours. Did you ever consider how the effects of marijuana might impair your ability to drive? Did you ever think about what distorted perception, slowed-down reaction time, and lethargy might mean if you had to brake suddenly? Some people think that it’s not a problem to drive a car when they're stoned. Some even believe that they can operate a motor vehicle more safely than when they are sober. By now, most people know that drunk driving is bad. But did you know that almost 1 in 4 car crashes involve drugs? And marijuana is not like alcohol. Instead of the impairment decreasing over time, it actually increases for up to 21 hours after use, regardless of amount. Prescription Drugs: Numerous experiments have been performed to evaluate the effects of prescription drugs on vision, attention, vigilance, and the performance of psychomotor skills such as tracking. When a prescription drug is shown to produce side effects, this finding has important implications for the use of drugs while driving. A wide variety of studies have shown that many prescription tranquilizers, especially benzodiazepines such as Valium, impair attention and tracking. However, more recently introduced tranquilizers such as buspirone (tradename Buspar) showed little evidence of impairment. Another class of psychoactive drugs, antidepressants, have long been known to impair performance on a variety of skills. This is especially true of amitriptyline (tradename Elavil). However, recently introduced types of antidepressants, such as Prozac and other selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, such as Zoloft, Paxil, and Effexor, do not produce the same degree of impairment. |
Drug Side Effects
Drug addiction and abuse comes with a heavy price. There are drastic drug side effects associated with drug misuse and abuse. Drug side effects from legal and illegal drugs can range from mild itching to comas and death. In addition to the physical drug side effects mentioned, there are many psychological drug side effects of drug abuse; the most serious being drug addiction and overdose.
Drug Addiction
Drug addiction is a pattern of repeated drug taking that usually results in tolerance (the need for greater amounts of the drug to achieve the same effect), withdrawal (physical and cognitive effects when drug use declines or stops), and compulsive drug taking behavior (drug taking that persists despite efforts to reduce intake and despite problems with family, friends, and work). Drug addiction encompasses a diverse range of drugs (such as alcohol, cannabis, amphetamines, and cocaine) and is caused by many different factors.
Drug Rehabilitation
Drug rehabilitation is a place or program that an individual enters to treat a drug or alcohol addiction. Through therapy and education, the individual is restored to their former non-drug using self. They are then able to re-enter society clean and sober. There are many reasons why a person would need to attend a drug rehabilitation program. Some of the many reasons are: the inability to control their drinking or drug use, alienating their friends and family, problems with the law, and problems at work. Also, there are several different types of drug rehabilitation programs available: inpatient, outpatient, residential, short-term, and long-term.
Addiction Treatment
Addiction treatment is needed when an individual finds that they have developed a drug or alcohol addiction which they are not able to successful end on their own. With the help of addiction treatment, addicted individual can get help to control their drug taking behavior and live happy and successful lives. There are several addiction treatment options available for drug and alcohol addiction. Some of these options include self-help groups, counseling, drug rehabilitation programs (in and out-patient), and residential treatment facilities. Each of these differ
in their aims and outcomes and elements of these addiction treatment options are often
combined.
Addict
An addict is an individual who has a compulsive urge to use drugs, to the point where they feel they have no effective choice but to continue use. An addict will continue their self destructive behaviors in order to feel good or to avoid
feeling bad. It can dominate their mind, and keep them coming back for more. The addiction can be
different for each addict, depending on their vice and the kind of person they
